There's general agreement that Sony stumbled out of the gate with the PlayStation 3. Months of intense hype were followed by a late launch (fully a year after the Xbox 360) and a staggering $600 price tag for the deluxe model.
Even worse, the PS3 didn't initially have any real must-have exclusive titles, and despite the power of its vaunted Cell processor, multiplatform games from third-party developers didn't look appreciably better than the respective titles on the Xbox 360.
Since then, the company's been modifying the PlayStation product line to better fit the competitive market landscape. As of August 2008, a new "bargain" PS3 is available with a larger, 80GB hard drive, and a "deluxe" model is due in November, doubling the capacity to 160GB.
Both, however, lack backward compatibility with PS2 games and do not come with flash card readers. If those features are a must, it might be best to pick up the 80GB "Metal Gear" bundle version on eBay w... More »
Not the biggest PlayStation 3 release week ever (unless you're in Japan), but at least that means Mirror's Edge will get the attention it deserves.
While you're not running and jumping across buildings, Americans will have a chance to go back to World War II, while Europeans will have plenty to sing about with two SingStar titles. Here's the full release list:
US Games
• Mirror's Edge
• Call of Duty World of War

Publisher Take-Two has announced the results of its first quarter, showing sales of $240.4 million and losses up to $38 million, as it announces that BioShock 2 will be released during fall of 2009, and that it has acquired Mafia developer Illusion Softworks.
Sales fell from $277.3 million the year prior, due to what Take-Two says was a lighter holiday release schedule. Sales were mainly driven by BioShock, Carnival Games, NBA 2K8, and continued sales of its Grand Theft Auto releases, including the release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories in Japan. Losses were up from $21.5 million the year prior.
Take-Two meanwhile announced that its recently opened 2K Marin studio was developing BioShock 2, currently planned for release at the end of 2009. The publisher says 2 million copies of the original BioShock have been sold worldwide to date.
The company also announced that it has acquired Mafia and Hidden & Dangerous developer Illusion Softworks, w... More »
While I’ve previously gone through my initial impressions of MLB 2K8 and MLB 08: The Show, I figured it would be interesting to match the two games up in different categories and determine which came out on top.
Of course those with only a 360 don’t have a choice in the matter, but it’s important to know what is being done well and what isn’t both on their own individual terms as well as competitively for the future of these franchises.
The two games headed into release taking completely different paths. 2K8 dramatically changed the central mechanics and practically hid the game as very few videos could be found along with (intentionally or not) submitting the demo too late for it to be out prior to release.
The Show stayed the course while improving its already stellar gameplay, was very open with media, and the demo was several weeks out in front of the release date. Generally those are signs that can be read, and in this case the assu... More »

The March issue of Game Informer has made its way out and it includes an article on MLB 2K8 that mentions a few previously unknown details about the game.
There is so much content included in the game that it couldn’t all fit onto the 360 disc. Free downloadable content will be provided for what was left out
Apparently the 360 version of the game is lacking the unlockable stadiums and Cool Base alternate uniforms that the PS3 version has. Because of that they will be made available on release day as free downloadable content.
While this shouldn’t bother those who have access to Xbox Live, those who don’t will miss out on the content completely which is unfortunate. It is somewhat surprising to hear of capacity issues when games such as Madden and NCAA Football pack so much in without having to take similar measures.
The hitting window has expanded from three frames in 2K7 to 12-16 frames in 2K8. This should increase the ability... More »
