We have been receiving some questions from the curious such as "What does the PS3's Hard Disk Filesystem look like?"

Below is a file list off the hard disk, although some directories are still inaccessible, we would like to share them with you.

The BCUS98107 entry is that of Resistance: Fall of Man, and its files are cache files copied to the HDD. Also, there is a pic of the debug controller lit up below.

Milky_Joe has created an interesting looking 3.5" PS3 Hard Disk holder for a school project. The inspiration for the the project was that 3.5" Hard Drives were a lot cheaper than 2.5" equivalents.

To quote: The case itself was constructed from black acrylic sheets (3mm thick for the dimension lovers out there) that were cut to shape with a laser cutter and moulded were necessary (i.e the top and bottom panels).

The pieces were stuck together using a chemical known as diachloromethane (I could give you the atomic structure if you wanted) which dissolves plastics before evaporating to leave whatever it was that was unlucky enough to be touching the plastic at the time well and truly stuck.

I used silver spray paint (I believe it was Ford Moondust to be precise) to spray on the motif and black fabric on the underside to prevent scratching. The HDD is held in place by a 2-piece bracket that sits snuggly within the curved panels of the unit t... More »

GamePro has given us the low-down on how to super charge your PS3 with the only PS3-supported 500GB hard drive - the Samsung M6. They claim it is the only available 500GB drive on the market to support the PS3, read on for the simple steps to supercharged success...

Step #1: Purchase the Samsung M6 500GB hard drive (widely available online for around $230). Important note: The M6 is the only 500GB internal hard drive that will fit into the PS3. Use the PS3's Backup function to transfer saves and other content to a USB drive.

Step #2: Unplug the PS3 and ground yourself. Open the PS3's hard drive access port, located on the side of the unit, with your fingernail.

Step #3: Carefully unscrew the blue screw using the correct screwdriver bit (Philips Precise) using gentle pressure, taking care not to strip the screw. Pull out the metal hinge, and slide the hard drive tray out.

Step #4: Unscrew the four screws that attach th... More »

MTV have found out that some Blu-ray games require installs to the hard drive because Blu-ray drives can only read at one speed.

"When this is combined with the extremely large size of Blu-ray discs, and simply dumping existing DVD data onto a Blu-ray disc will inevitably result in longer load times."

To quote: The issue arises from differences in the reading techniques of DVD and Blu-ray. By nature, the outer and inner parts of a disc move at different speeds while a disc is spinning, regardless of format (CD, DVD, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, etc.).

While DVD drives can read data at those differing speeds, Blu-ray reads at one speed. Combine that with the extremely large size of Blu-ray discs, and simply dumping existing DVD data onto a Blu-ray disc will inevitably result in longer load times.

Installations are a way around this issue.

When a publisher asks you to install a game on PS3, it’s because they’re moving some of the... More »

The video shows:

- Warhawk running from HDD
- no PKG version
- no WH disc while WH is running
- Motorstorm running as proxy disc
- legal way

I wont explain the details here till the project is finished 100%, also cuz many devs want to take a look at first and not get it patched that fast. I can say that if all will work like I want it to you'll need:

- "special" game dump of the game you want to play from HDD
- one (any) original bd game
- 2x minimum 60GB HDD's (illegal way - it worx but its not allowed in most countrys - its working like a packed game on psp memory stick)

OR

-1 60GB HDD + original disc (legal way - no need to be inserted while playing)

Im using newest firmware PAL 60GB SKU. 3 games tested yet - working.
Games which should be possible from the knowledge i got yet:

- Warhawk
- Motorstorm More »

Update: A brief guide and F.A.Q. are available HERE and NDT posted a more detailed walkthrough.

Guys,

I need a little help from the community, if possible i'd like to have from all of you uploaded somewhere (example: rapidshare) the first 2048KB of the HDD partition. Specifically i need a test conducted this way:

Power up the ps3, go to the formatting utility, and format the ps3 HDD with the option of 10GB for the ps3 system.

Power off the ps3, remove the hard disk, attach it to the PC and dump the first 2048KB.

Compress the 2048 with the program you actually prefer (rar, zip whatever) and upload and post a link here.

For the dumping part winhex (for windows) or dd (unix and windows), if any problem or question rise, feel free to contact me or other devs, thanks a... More »

If you're still having trouble tracking down Samsung's SpinPoint M6 to boost your PS3 HDD storage space, Western Digital is now shipping a PS3-compatable 500GB 2.5-Inch drive ($220), with a whopping 1TB drive expected by 2010.

To quote: WD has just announced that it has started volume shipping its 500GB 2.5-inch Scorpio Blue drive, a notebook drive with 250GB per platter and a 5,400rpm spin speed. Seagate expects to ship its half terabyte 2.5-incher before the end of the year.

Our sources say WD and Fujitsu will have 750GB 2.5-inch drives by mid-2009 and 1 terabyte units by early 2010, if not the end of 2009. WD is building quite a track record of pipping Seagate by introducing notebook drives at progressively higher capacity points first, doing t... More »

We now have confirmation available which debunks previous reports of a near-7GB install for Soul Calibur IV.

Courtesy of bi0sparkz from GameTrailers (linked above), the magazine scan below now confirms that the Soul Calibur IV install size is 2.85GB and a 2MB save on PS3.

While those with larger PS3 hard disk drives remain unconcerned, it is definitely comforting news for Soul Calibur IV fans who still own smaller PS3 HDDs.
