The wait is finally over for those anticipating the day PS3 Firmware 2.40 would be available.

A few weeks back, we posted a video of PS3 Firmware 2.40 Debug in action on a TEST PS3 unit, and more recently Sony confirmed the PS3 Firmware 2.40 Update's Features (including detailing which titles currently offer Trophy support), along with an Official PS3 Firmware v2.40 FAQ.

As a follow-up to last week's post, this week we deliver more information on the SN Systems suite of products, specifically the Target Manager and ProDG Debugger for PS3.

As most recall, for ages SN Systems tools have required license files, usually based off a PC's MAC address and only available to licensed developers. We managed to 'acquire' a few for our PS3 Devs, but in addition to those each EXE had to be modified... but it was not a problem for one of our talented DEVs!

In the video below (clear version HERE), it demonstrates adding the SN license file, and showing that it is valid.

After that the Target Manager (which facilitates PC/PS3 communications) is started up, the old TEST removed,... More »

Courtesy of Eric Lempel (Director, PlayStation Network Operations) via the PlayStation Blog today:

Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40.

We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away.

Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums.

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions:

Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Can you use the web browser in game?

No, you must exit the game before browsing the int... More »

Thanks to reader Ben Torode, we've got a proper translation of this Watch Impress article, detailing a number of new features coming to 2.40 not yet mentioned by SCEA, as far as we know:

1. The way to quit games has also been modified in line with these changes, and a game can be exited by pressing the PS button during a game and selecting "Game" then "Quit Game" from the XMB.

2. On the XMB in general, added functions include a clock displayed on the XMB, a function to delete all entered text in the entry field when using text entry with a keyboard, and a function which displays an icon to indicate when operation of the PS button is disabled.

3. In "Users" under the XMB, an item has been added to power off the PS3 console. Under "Settings", options have been added to automatically power off after a system software update, and "assign controller", "controller vibration fu... More »

If any of you have ever been on any PlayStation-related blog at any point in time since the PS3’s release (and let’s be frank, that’ll be a fair few of you) you’ll have noticed that the demands for an in-game Xross Media Bar have been ever-ongoing.

Every single post on the the PlayStation.blog (still not understanding the need for that dot) has received streams of comments from the rabid PS3 owners complaining about a lack of service and a lack of respect for the consumer base who’ve splashed out several hundred dollars/pounds/Euros/et cetera on their shiny black behemoth.

The thing is, I’m wondering why, as a collective, they don’t seem to have a single brain cell between them to share some sort of common sense when it comes to developing features such as the in-game-XMB, which we’ve just received after months and months of demand. Even after we’ve picked that up, we’re still baying for more. My ultimate slating of PlayStation fanboys con... More »

Lets face, E3 is only a short while away, 2 weeks today actually it kicks off with Microsoft's press conference. But what can we expect before E3 with the pre-E3 conferences.

First off, there are some pretty big changes. While Reggie Fils-Aime is still at Nintendo, Phil Harrison and Peter Moore have now bitten the dust from Sony and Microsoft and are now at EA Sports and Atari which means no fun with them this year (Especially Peter).

But what can Sony pull out of the bag for their conference this year? Well, we tell you all here what could possibly happen at that conference on July 15th.

Hardware: This will most likely be the PlayStation 2's final appearence at E3 after the short time they had on it last year. There could be one final swansong game for the PS2 unveiled at E3 to send the console off to Videogaming heaven but that is very doubtful sadly.

As for the PSP, it needs a shunt in the back-side. Not since... More »

Well, they didn’t announce one in its current parlance exactly. It’s more like the original horse — the one that disgorged the elite Achaeans into Troy. In this case, the Trojan Horse is the PS3 console, and it will be disgorging content. It’s not I who made this historical comparison, some analyst did, but I sure wish I had.

The plan was, all along it seems, to roll out the game console and constantly upgrade its capabilities. For example, soon you will be able to get news and weather from your PS3, download feature films, and there will be a photo/movie management app with geotagging and a globe view, not unlike what I saw at the Surface event, but without the (somewhat critical) touchy interface.

Well, I look forward to getting a PS3 one of these days, but they keep making it a sweeter deal so I t... More »

In response to a purported sceenshot showing PS2 game downloads for PlayStation 3, Sony says the image "must have been mocked up by an excited consumer."

I'm not sure where the image came from," said Sony's Patrick Seybold, when questioned by GamePro on visible allegations that PS2 games would be coming to the PlayStation Store.

"At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3."

Earlier yesterday, an unverified user of the N4G Forums posted the shown photo, claiming to have received the image directly from Sony Europe by way of an insider contact.

According to the anonymous source, Sony will unveil PS2 game downloads while attending E3 next month, this in response to Microsoft's Xbox Originals which debuted on Xbox 360 last year. Despite Sony's denial, said expansion to... More »
