Tretton: Sony Considering PSP with Hard Drive

314w ago - According to Jack Tretton, Sony is considering a PSP with a hard drive. Tretton reportedly said that "with the recently announced ability to purchase movies on a PlayStation 3 and move them over to a PlayStation Portable, and as the cost of memory continues to drop, the chance that a new PlayStation Portable would include some sort of internal storage option is becoming increasingly likely."

To quote: Sony has thought about and continues to play around with the idea of building a PlayStation Portable with a built in hard drive or internal memory, Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said this morning at a gather of game writers.

"I think we definitely thought about it," he said. "I think that's the trend moving forward."

With the recently announced ability to purchase movies on a PlayStation 3 and move them over to a PlayStation Portable, and as the cost of memory continues to drop, the chance that a new PlayStation Portable would include some sort of internal storage option is becoming increasingly likely, Tretton said.

High capacity Memory Sticks' are so expensive. So, a PSP with a built in HDD (maybe changeable) should make users happy.

if they put a HDD in it i bet the prices would go up on the PSP, kinda like the blu-ray player paying for half the ps3.

I think adding a HD to a PSP would be a great idea... personally I was very surprised when i got my PSP about 6 months ago that it had no memory what so ever. Plus the added cost to a PSP plus HD is bound to be more cost effective then buying sd cards!

I think that this is a much needed upgrade. I know people who use their PSP mainly as a PMP and for them this would be a godsend. They would not have to buy an iPod or another PMP because their gaming system would be able to satisfy their capacity requirements.

Also, I think that Sony would not have as much of a pirating problem as they have now, even though they added a hard drive. This is because they would likely change the way that they reflash the firmware of broken PSPs, closing the only open hole in new PSPs. While another exploit would most likely be discovered, it would take a while.

I think pricing can still be made competitive with solid state. If they did away with UMD (let's face it who really WANTS to use UMD?), that would save some costs.

As for opening up to more pirated games. 4 & 8GB memsticks are getting more reasonably priced by the day and you can fit a load of pirated games on those, so I don't think offering up a PSP-HDD would impact very much. I do however think it would tempt people to look at them instead of 'fruitier' product names out there.
