PS3 3K3y How It Works:
3k3y is an optical disk drive emulator for the PlayStation 3 video game console. It is installed between the genuine Blu-ray drive and the PS3 motherboard.
Once 3k3y is successfully installed and configured it can be used to make backups of your original PS3 game disks to USB media, and play those backups from USB media without the need of the original game disk.
Several games can be backed up to a single USB media, making it ideal as a 'jukebox' for hardcore gamers as well as for families with children too young to handle bluray discs with appropriate care.
3k3y works with most PS3 models, however there are a few exceptions, most notably the new super slim model and all PS3s which comes with firmware 4.xx (after retrieving the drive key the PS3 can be upgraded to any firmware). We are working to add support for these PS3's but you are adviced to consult with your reseller if you are in doubt whether your PS3 is compatible with 3k3y or not.
Finally, 3K3Y has detailed pricing at a costly USD $129 for those who can't wait for free PlayStation 3 scene solutions, new PS3 key leaks, CEX and DEX fixes, etc.
Shortly following, a bit more information about 3K3y and 3Dump (via consolecrunch.com/more-information-about-3k3y-3dump-coming-soon/) surfaced, to quote:
Following up on the previous update, today the 3K3y Team shows us a picture of their future release application called 3Dump that allows you to dump the key that is needed to use the 3K3y.

It is 100% fake, in the picture you can see a simple SATA to PATA converter. Has no sense for this project use a PATA HD. Also the a small single chip as in the picture is too small for emulate completely a BD subsystem, at least we need a external RAM and FLASH to be done.
In any case in theory this solution, as the WODE DVD emulation will be possible, but it need that the protection system will be emulate too. Due the protection system is not known, is not possible to create an emulator that emulate BD with protection subsystem. Need more road...
prohpet, atm its the only shown hope for people who wants to play there games from hdd. i am waiting since months for a cfw, or other things to play my games from a hdd.
if this is real, and will lead to the point that i can place all my games on a hdd. i will use it. if there will be a custom firmware faster then this, i will check it and use it.
whatever comes first, to solve my problems, i will use it. but for real, many people saying many things, and you are a person who is legit to his words. but i don't see much from you all. but these china dudes, are crazy, many things like this dongle and so one, are coming from these freaks. so my opinion about it, is "this is real, no fake".
cfwprophet How's the pace in the underground right now? I'm curious since in public side, there is almost nothing to tell if there is good progress, no progress, or maybe dead ends. Just wondering if I should expect Liberation Day to happen sometime before ... this Christmas? ^^
No Hacking and No CFW needed, emulation is the future ? Yea but just for pirating games. No benefit of homebrew or something like that. And by the way bootloader exploit is already in work same as now some dev's asked team ac1d to hold back the cex2dex tool. Anyway so we have more time to work on other things and the scene is finally again working together, even if it is underground and not in public but real good and great things will be coming this year. Till this bd emu chip is out it will be overpriced crap.
No problem Yeah I wonder when we will know more too? As niwakun already mentioned, the BD drive has updatable FW and so I also wonder how this board would handle that (if it does handle it at all!).
One thing that I find interesting is that they say they wanted to keep this project quiet because Sony can't patch it and so the legal team would "be all over it" once it is released... sooooo why keep it quiet in the first place? I'm only asking because Sony's legal team having prior knowledge to it's existence wouldn't make that much of an impact unless they know exactly where it will eventually be produced or sold.
They would still have to take the same steps necessary to prevent the sale of it after it is released irrespective of prior knowledge so I don't see a problem with more info being released about it's functionality and pricing etc. (Just not info about the associated manufacturer or retailers!)
