This can be installed without having to open up your PS3, just by restoring a custom generated PUP file.
It's possible this CFW will also work on the slim to actually *enable* OtherOS; I'll know when my infectus gets here.

You buy the game, you buy the console, that should be enough for you to play it. It has been like this for almost 20-25 years.
In the past you would go to a store, buy a NES game and the console them there you go the game is on your tv.
Now you can only play the game if you agree with $ony ? Ok, I don't agree so take off my online game play, but my offline mode ?
If in the next upgrade $ony states that you need to play with your pants down with a $ony logo sticked in your ass you will have to do that ?
I've agreed to the past user agreement and when I bought the ps3 it said that I would be able to play ps3 games that's the main purpose of this black box. So what about it now ?
Somebody need to buy Red Dead Redemption and sue $ony.
because if there will be a custom firmware, it will be signed with the original sony key. so the console will think its a normal update.
so you only have to take the number of the newest firmware, and put it in your new custom firmware to let the console update to this firmware.
am i wrong with that theory?
I was just thinking if Geohot really did load a SPE if he did it based on a injection from otherOS, or if he figured out what we are coming up on publicly and made some dump program in a signed PUP?
Also if he didn't just edit the unsigned part of firmware to make this video then he must of reversed their binaries really fast, and he has no trace analysis does he? Can IDA trace Cell RISC? I guess he could of wrote a plugin for the extensions... but still.
In any case, if there is no injections able from otherOS lpar then I guess building custom PUP based on patched-reversed firmware binaries is the next logical step. His claim that he verified the SPE isolation is pretty far fetched unless he made an assumption based on some routines he found..
I merged your thread to this existing one where this topic is being discussed. If you read the last few pages you will find the general consensus is those who want to play online (or games that require Firmware above 3.15) tend to update, while those who don't are waiting it out... so it's personal preference really, based on what you do with your PS3.
