185w ago - Today PlayStation 3 developer bgK has updated ScummVM, an implementation of LucasArts SCUMM interpreter emulator, to Build 20110605 for PS3 Custom Firmware users.

For those unaware, ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files.

To quote: ScummVM on PS3:

Prerequisites

  • A homebrew enabled PlayStation 3 console. As of now that mostly means having a custom firmware installed. Obtaining and installing such a software is out of the scope of this document. Sorry, but you’re on your own for that one.

  • At least one ScummVM supported game. The list of compatible games can be seen here: [Register or Login to view links]
  • The page [Register or Login to view links] references some places where those games can be bought. Demonstration versions for most of the supported games are downloadable on [Register or Login to view links]
  • An USB drive.

Installing

  • From a computer, download the installable package of the PS3 port from ScummVM’s main site. It should be a .pkg file. Copy it to an USB drive.
  • After having plugged the USB drive to you PS3, the installation package should appear in the XMB under the “Games > Install Package” menu. Installing it copies ScummVM and its dependencies to your PS3′s hard drive. It also adds the “Games > PlayStation 3 > ScummVM” XMB entry which is to be used to launch ScummVM.

Configuring and playing games

  • The user manual describes how to add games to ScummVM and launch them : [Register or Login to view links]

PlayStation 3 Specifics

  • Games can be launched either from an USB drive or from the internal hard drive. The internal hard drive has better performance though.
  • Savegames are wrote in the /hdd0/game/SCUM12000/saves folder.
  • Left stick => Mouse
  • Cross => Left mouse button
  • Circle => Right mouse button
  • Triangle => Game menu (F5)
  • Square => Escape
  • Start => ScummVM’s in global game menu
  • Select => Toggle virtual keyboard
  • L1 => AGI predictive input dialog

Disclaimer

  • Unauthorized distribution of an installable package with non freeware games included is a violation of the copyright law and is as such forbidden.

Building from source

  • This port of ScummVM to the PS3 is based on SDL. It uses the open source SDK PSL1GHT.
  • The dependencies needed to build it are :
  • The toolchain from [Register or Login to view links]
  • SDL from [Register or Login to view links]
  • ScummVM from [Register or Login to view links]

Once all the dependencies are correctly setup, an installable package can be obtained from source by issuing the following command :

./configure –host=ps3 && make ps3pkg

well i did and i didn't, i stuffed around with curse of monkey island and still no go.

but then i tried day of the tentacle, and discworld and they both work for them.

so i think its just an issue with the curse of monkey island i have, whenever i press start i can't select any of the options from the screen.

i'm using: The Curse Of Monkey Island (CD Windows)

does anyone have this version of the game working with saves? if not can you reccomend a version that works with saves?

i really want to show my fiance this series but don't want to jump her straight into no 2 without seeing the first one thru, its such a classic game.

can you give me a screenie of yours?

Edit: nvm i found it lol in options/paths theres a place to select save game output. durr i'm stupid.

Which version are you using? I'm having no problem at all with saving... on most of the Lucasarts games you can just hit start and the option will come up for it, you just have to make sure that in the main menu you set up your paths properly. I have all of my paths set to usb0:/scummvm/, and all of the games have subdirectories within that folder.

On some of the games, like the ones by Sierra, you have to go the save menus within the games themselves, and then you can save from there. Some of them (like Simon the Sorcerer) you have to use an inventory item... if I remember right, in Simon if you use the postcard you can save. Hope this helps
