ScummVM Build 20110605 for PS3 Custom Firmware by bgK

184w ago - Today PlayStation 3 developer bgK has updated ScummVM, an implementation of LucasArts SCUMM interpreter emulator, to Build 20110605 for PS3 Custom Firmware users.

For those unaware, ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files.

Prerequisites

  • A homebrew enabled PlayStation 3 console. As of now that mostly means having a custom firmware installed. Obtaining and installing such a software is out of the scope of this document. Sorry, but you’re on your own for that one.

  • At least one ScummVM supported game. The list of compatible games can be seen here: [Register or Login to view links]
  • The page [Register or Login to view links] references some places where those games can be bought. Demonstration versions for most of the supported games are downloadable on [Register or Login to view links]
  • An USB drive.

Installing

  • From a computer, download the installable package of the PS3 port from ScummVM’s main site. It should be a .pkg file. Copy it to an USB drive.
  • After having plugged the USB drive to you PS3, the installation package should appear in the XMB under the “Games > Install Package” menu. Installing it copies ScummVM and its dependencies to your PS3′s hard drive. It also adds the “Games > PlayStation 3 > ScummVM” XMB entry which is to be used to launch ScummVM.

Configuring and playing games

PlayStation 3 Specifics

  • Games can be launched either from an USB drive or from the internal hard drive. The internal hard drive has better performance though.
  • Savegames are wrote in the /hdd0/game/SCUM12000/saves folder.
  • Left stick => Mouse
  • Cross => Left mouse button
  • Circle => Right mouse button
  • Triangle => Game menu (F5)
  • Square => Escape
  • Start => ScummVM’s in global game menu
  • Select => Toggle virtual keyboard
  • L1 => AGI predictive input dialog

Building from source

  • This port of ScummVM to the PS3 is based on SDL. It uses the open source SDK PSL1GHT.
  • The dependencies needed to build it are :

Once all the dependencies are correctly setup, an installable package can be obtained from source by issuing the following command :

./configure –host=ps3 && make ps3pkg

Following up on their previous update, this weekend the ScummVM Team have updated their ScummVM PS3 Emulator release to version 1.7.0 dubbed The Neverrelease with details below.

To quote: ScummVM 1.7.0 "The Neverrelease" is out!

A year has passed and ScummVM 1.7.0 is here. With this release we have added support for 45 completely new games. These are:

  • The Neverhood
  • Mortville Manor
  • Voyeur
  • Return to Ringworld
  • Chivalry is Not Dead

Also, we have updated the MT-32 emulator, added an OpenGL backend, improved many aspects of the GUI, enhanced the AGOS engine, made Urban Runner's videos less CPU-demanding, fixed tons of bugs in dozens of SCI games, improved sound in Loom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and improved platform portability for the Tony and Tinsel engines.

But this is not all. We have added experimental support for the OUYA console (we couldn't add GCW-Zero support simply because sev still awaits his console from Kickstarter), made major improvements to the PS2 port and merged the Bada with Tizen ports.

Finally, for those unaware: ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, ...), many of Sierra's AGI and SCI games (such as King's Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, ...), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment's children's SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.

I love these amazing pieces of work! I wish I had my CFW ps3 still. My last 3 CFW ps3's went out.

It's nice to see support brought to some old adventure classics. Hopefully once the PS4 gets figured out these emulators and applications won't be so hard to develop for due to the more familiar architecture.
