18w ago - Following up on his previous update, today PlayStation 3 developer r04drunner has announced that a RC7 update for Red Ribbon GNU / Linux on the PS3 entertainment system is now available.

To quote: Red Ribbon release candidate 7 is now available. It is based on Debian Wheezy and It includes the following changes:

Kernel 3.7.1 with the Graf_chokolo's, Marcan's and Gitbrew's patches.
New version of the installer with some features added and some bugs fixed.
New version of the Red Ribbon theme.
Iceweasel (Firefox) updated to the 17 release.
Asbestos and OtherOS now will use the same kernel.
Kboot now will set the latest kernel as the default boot option.
Added a new tool to configure the timeout on Petitboot.
Added support for Playstation Eyetoy.
Added GUVCview as the tool for capturing video from the webcam.
Gnome-Player is now the media player.
Added a new tool to configure the PS3's video mode.
Added support for NTFS.
PulseAudio is now the sound server.
Added a new volume control tool.

All the new features are available for the RC6 by installing the latest online update. You need to connect the PS3 to the internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

wget http://downloads.redribbon.t15.org/online-update-2013-01-10.sh

Then, you must execute it:

sudo sh online-update-2013-01-10.sh

And wait until finished.

Following up on his previous RC6 update, r04drunner has announced today that a new online update for Red Ribbon GNU / Linux on the PS3 entertainment system is released.

Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/redribbon/files/latest/download

To quote: This update includes the following changes:

• Added a 3.6.7 kernel with the Graf_chokolo's, Marcan's and Gitbrew's patches.
• Added PS3-utils.
• Added Mplayer.

You need to connect the PS3 to the internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

wget http://redribbon.t15.org/downloads/online-update-2012-11-21.sh

Then, you can execute it:

sudo sh online-update-2012-11-21.sh

And wait until finished.

The next time that you reboot the system, some new kernel options will appear on Petitboot. You must select the new 3.6.7 option for OtherOS or Asbestos.

Once you have booted using the new kernel version, if you want to remove the old 3.5.2 kernel versions, you can do it using the Synaptic package manager or executing the next command on a lxterminal:

apt-get remove linux-image-3.5.2-red-ribbon-powerpc64-asbestos linux-image-3.5.2-red-ribbon-powerpc64-otheros linux-headers-3.5.2-red-ribbon-powerpc64-asbestos linux-headers-3.5.2-red-ribbon-powerpc64-otheros

Below are the changes, to quote: Red Ribbon Release Candidate 6 is based on Debian Wheezy and it includes the following changes:

• Kernel 3.5.2 with the Graf_chokolo's, Marcan's and Gitbrew's patches.
• New version of the installer with some features added and some bugs fixed.
• The installer now supports the portuguese language.
• Added a notification alert when the disk space is lower than 100 MB.
• Kboot-setup now supports a config file.
• New version of the Red Ribbon theme.
• Added Gnome Users-admin as the user administration tool.
• Iceweasel (Firefox) updated to the 14 release.
• Added Gnome Time-admin as the date and time administration tool.
• Added the kernel headers and the build tools.

Following up on their Red Ribbon GNU / Linux Release Candidate 5 for PS3 update, today PlayStation 3 developer r04drunner has incorporated the wireless driver for PS3 Slim models from Gitbrew into Red Ribbon GNU / Linux RC5 for PS3.

To quote from their page: This update integrates the wireless driver for the slims models developed by gitbrew. You need to connect the PS3 to the Internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

wget http://redribbon.t15.org/downloads/online-update-2011-11-21.sh

Then, you can execute it:

sudo sh online-update-2011-11-21.sh

And wait until finished.

If while executing it asks: You are running a kernel (version 2.6.38-powerpc64) and attempting to remove the same version. This is a potentially disastrous action. Not only will /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-powerpc64 be removed, making it impossible to boot it, (you will have to take action to change your boot loader to boot a new kernel), it will also remove all modules under the directory /lib/modules/2.6.38-powerpc64. Just having a copy of the kernel image is not enough, you will have to replace the modules too.

I repeat, this is very dangerous. If at all in doubt, answer Yes. If you know exactly what you are doing, and are prepared to hose your system, then answer No.

Do you want to abort removal now?

You must answer NO.
