PS3 Slim Models Wireless Driver Added to Red Ribbon / Linux RC5

147w ago - Following up on their Red Ribbon GNU / Linux Release Candidate 5 for PS3 update, today PlayStation 3 developer r04drunner has incorporated the wireless driver for PS3 Slim models from Gitbrew into Red Ribbon GNU / Linux RC5 for PS3.

To quote from their page: This update integrates the wireless driver for the slims models developed by gitbrew. You need to connect the PS3 to the Internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

[Register or Login to view code]

Then, you can execute it:

[Register or Login to view code]

And wait until finished.

If while executing it asks: You are running a kernel (version 2.6.38-powerpc64) and attempting to remove the same version. This is a potentially disastrous action. Not only will /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-powerpc64 be removed, making it impossible to boot it, (you will have to take action to change your boot loader to boot a new kernel), it will also remove all modules under the directory /lib/modules/2.6.38-powerpc64. Just having a copy of the kernel image is not enough, you will have to replace the modules too.

I repeat, this is very dangerous. If at all in doubt, answer Yes. If you know exactly what you are doing, and are prepared to hose your system, then answer No.

Do you want to abort removal now?

You must answer NO.

Following up on his previous update, today PlayStation 3 developer r04drunner has announced that a new online update for Red Ribbon GNU / Linux LXDE 14.03 and RC 7 for PlayStation 3 on the PS3 entertainment system is now available with details below.

Download: [Register or Login to view links] (red_ribbon_lxde_14.03.iso - 486 MB)

To quote: This update has been designed Red Ribbon LXDE 14.03 and RC 7. It includes the following changes:

  • Iceweasel (Firefox) updated to the 30 release.
  • Added a new version of the Red Ribbon theme.
  • Systemd is now the system management daemon.
  • The "Logout" window, the "System settings" window, the "Petitboot setup" tool and the "Video mode setup" tool were migrated to the latest GTK 3 libraries.
  • All the available updates from Debian Jessie.

You need to connect the PS3 to the internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:

[Register or Login to view code]

Then, you must execute it:

[Register or Login to view code]

And wait until finished. Then, you must logout and login again.

This update will be included on the next release of the LiveCD.

If while executing it asks:

You are attempting to install a kernel image (version 3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686) However, the directory /lib/modules/3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686/kernel still exists. If this directory belongs to a previous linux-image-3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686 package, and if you have deselected some modules, or installed standalone modules packages, this could be bad.

If /lib/modules/3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686/kernel belongs to an old install of linux-image-3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686, then this is your last chance to abort the installation of this kernel image (nothing has been changed yet).

If you know what you are doing, and if you feel that this image should be installed despite this anomaly, Please answer n to the question.

Otherwise, I suggest you move /lib/modules/3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686/kernel out of the way, perhaps to /lib/modules/3.12.6-red-ribbon-i686.kernel.old or something, and then try re-installing this image.

Stop install since the kernel-image is already installed? You must answer NO.

This update will be included on the next release of the LiveCD.

Bare in mind the following, to install it you have to choose a CFW which includes OtherOS (patched Sony) or OtherOS++ which has extended functionality.

For those unaware, Red Ribbon GNU / Linux is a PPC64 GNU / Linux distribution with support for Cell / BE, designed for Sony PS3. It is based on Debian GNU/Linux, completely free and open source software. No proprietary source of any kind is used in this distribution.

To quote: Hi! I have published Red Ribbon GNU/Linux LXDE 14.03.

Red Ribbon LXDE 14.03 is based on Debian Jessie and It includes the following changes:

  • Kernel 3.12.6 with the Graf_chokolo's, Marcan's and Gitbrew's patches.
  • New version of the installer with some features added and some bugs fixed.
  • New version of the Red Ribbon theme.
  • Iceweasel (Firefox) updated to the 27 release.
  • Blueman is now the bluetooth manager.
  • Added the SMTube application to play videos from Youtube.

I believe that Red Ribbon GNU/Linux is already a mature distribution and I've decided that the version will be based on the publication date, using the year followed by the month, like other distributions.

Also, I'm working in others Red Ribbon flavors based on others desktops, so I've included the desktop name on the release name.
