anyway .. is time for $ony to start PS4 and for US to lead PS3.

Depending on the model - yes, its been known for a few years, its either IDE, or in the newer boxes - SATA. The pinouts are available, in fact they are available here.

Of course, the drive has 60 lines vs the IDE standard 40 - but there are additional data signals on that line as well.

Looks like its an IDE drive actually, judging by the drive revision (302R) and by the sheer amount of wires in the picture, there are at least 25, if not more. Surprisingly it is a simple 1:1 wiring to an IDE connector, but it of course, is still quite the pain to do!

Until I opened up my PS3 I foolishly assumed the BD reader was just plain SATA or IDE, how silly of me. If it was a standard connection type then all this progress would have happened a long time ago.

That and all those dead PS3s would have some value. It can't burn but I'd would mind buying a dead PS3 cheap then putting its reader into my PC.
