IBM Anti-Geohack Patent to Protect Secrets Against Attacks?!

Sponsored Links
231w ago - A few weeks back GeoHot Hacked PS3, and now a new [Register or Login to view links] has surfaced from Kanna Shimizu of IBM for a method to protect secrets against encrypted section attacks.

SKFU writes: It seems it is SONY's answer for GeoHot's progress.

Take a look here, to quote: "A method, system, and computer-usable medium are disclosed for controlling unauthorized access to encrypted application program code. Predetermined program code is encrypted with a first key.

The hash value of an application verification certificate associated with a second key is calculated by performing a one-way hash function. Binding operations are then performed with the first key and the calculated hash value to generate a third key, which is a binding key.

The binding key is encrypted with a fourth key to generate an encrypted binding key, which is then embedded in the application. The application is digitally signed with a fifth key to generate an encrypted and signed program code image.

To decrypt the encrypted program code, the application verification key certificate is verified and in turn is used to verify the authenticity of the encrypted and signed program code image. The encrypted binding key is then decrypted with a sixth key to extract the binding key.

The hash value of the application verification certificate associated with the second key is then calculated and used with the extracted binding key to extract the first key. The extracted first key is then used to decrypt the encrypted application code."

Did anyone actually read the patent? Did anyone actually read my code?

They have nothing to do with each other at all.
Here's an off-topic question for you while you're here GeoHot, just curious...

Is it true that "someone" (name removed by request) explained to you how the whole system worked, loading metldr and iso spu, and then the other loaders can decrypt anything... and you parroted it as "my theories were correct about iso spus doing the crypto" on your blog?

That is what's going around IRC today, any truth to it by chance?

sony are idiots and ibm too

How so buddy? Don't you use anti-viruses/ firewalls/ internet security packages? I was under the impression that it was logic.

A develops wall against B.
For years, B cannot climb over wall.
B finally starts climbing wall.
A builds smooth wall with moat behind original wall.
B is stumped.

This is very interesting news. Boss would you care to shed light on whether it is possible to enable this SW/ FW wise or would HW be necessary? The timing is pretty coincidental, but no clarification given yet.

Also to those who think IBM are idiots, IBM is a HUGE sponsor of the Linux OS, which is necessary for anything to be accomplished on the PS3 so far.

I don't see how they're idiots, all they're doing is responding to a well publicized breach of their hardwares security. Wouldn't you if you were a hardware manufacturer?

Anyway who cares about this, none of the PS3's in homes today or probably for many months/years will have this technology.

Yes, idiots. Making such amazing technology like the Cell Processor and PS3. You call them idiots.
