GeoHot Retires from PS3 and iPhone Hacking, Others to Lead On

210w ago - Today George Hotz aka GeoHot has announced he is retiring from Sony PS3 and Apple iPhone hacking, citing that the demand for updates from end-users will never stop.

In his exit from the PS3 scene, GeoHot left many legitimate PlayStation 3 users without OtherOS and without the promised 3.21OO PS3 Custom Firmware.

The good news? Others whom GeoHot shared the PS3 METLDR info and LV2 dump with are currently using his work to continue hacking the PS3 console, with rumors from IRC (for what those are worth LOL) indicating a public "end-user" PS3 hack may arrive before September 2010 from their camp.

Unfortunately though, just like the past Dark_AleX and "M33" PSP releases, an incoming PS3 hack will probably be from a fictitious group and won't include anything useful to PS3 Devs such as dumps, reversals, sourcecode, etc.

Hopefully once a hole that Sony can't block is public, other PlayStation 3 Devs will begin working on the PS3 though... and sharing all the juicy the technical details along the way for others who wish to learn.

This will help ensure the PS3 scene won't fall victim to the hypocritical and ridiculous "anti-piracy, users deserve nothing" attitude that began the downfall and led to the fate of the current PSP scene.

To quote: His PS3 username, Twitter account, and blog are all now shut down. His last tweet said, "it was a cool ride, and i've learned a lot about a lot. perhaps one of these days i'll do a more formal goodbye."

Along with that post, he wrote in his blog explaining his reasons for retiring from the scene. He says that he "didn't fully realize most of the current scene don't care unless they are getting something," but now he does.

He then continued a bit more in his post with the following: "The real reason behind no release isn't technical. It's just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd."

Why would you even wait for that "3.21OO PS3 Custom Firmware" first of all? Does it even matter if you could use otheros or not? A real computer would get you much farther than the PS3's limited otheros compatibilities.

Second, would you even dare to play online with this "3.21OO PS3 Custom Firmware" if it were released? More than likely a week later you are going to find a nice ban hammer on your system as well as a new update for the PS3, courtesy of Sony Entertainment.

If you would even take a second to look at the PS3 at a realistic point of view, 3 years and no homebrew had happened and it isn't likely going to happen in just 5 or 6 weeks as geohot said it would. All he did was get your hopes up and crush it.

And I am afraid more false hopes of a possible homebrew are going to be on the way for the PS3 system. More than likely when the PS3 does get hacked it wouldn't matter anymore because the PS4 would be out and all the hypes and newer games would be exclusively for that system.Yes it matters. I paid for the feature, I want what I paid for. It really is as simple as that in my eyes.

Such a shame nothing really came from him or what he found he claimed to have everything but gave nothing.

Then when other os was taken away which was his fault he claimed not to update because he would make a custom fw and retain other os, but now all those who believed him and were holding out and were not able to go online or play new games on their ps3 are left with the options to either update to play new games or online or live without them and don't update.

I for one will not miss him since he seemed in it more to gain fame than to help anyone.

What I didn't like was the "I have the power of the gods in my hands" attitude and running off to the medias to tell the world, look at me.

I'm not sure the exact reason Sony pulled the OS from older models but this made a perfect excuse for them to do it. I think it would have been much better to have a little more hacking done before going for the glory because although Geo "hacked" the ps3 we have yet to see a simple "hello World" running.

You summed up my feelings exactly, and the point of my previous statements. I don't disagree with folks like Warrorer who take his side, insofar as he did have talent. I'll give you that. But as you stated, he didn't even give us a simple "Hello World" for the PS3, despite all his empty promises of CFW and what not. The only time we got a Hello World out of him was when he screamed it at the media, as in "Hello World, look at me, I'm a haxx0r!".

The LEAST, the VERY LEAST he could have done was given someone every last ounce of his findings to carry on before he decided to suckle at Apple and Sony's teets and "retire". He turned his back on his kindred, plain and simple.

Here's to you George. May you be forgotten as quickly as Shaun Fanning and other turncoat pirates/hackers turned media darlings who came before you. You will not be missed.

We need this A-hole but not at all. We have everything we need, but unfortunately nobody needed this knowledge to fruition.
