Disgaea 4 PS3 Japanese Translation Pre-Beta Version Patcher Out

Sponsored Links
169w ago - Following up on our initial release, we (Tidusnake666, Tobster7, Alexmagno) have now finally been able to fix Disgaea 4 Translation dialogue bugs.

That means, that apart from some menu entries, the game is all in English text (we decided to exclude sound patching option, because it's still asynched, so you'll have Japanese voices - if you don't like them - turn them off )

Yeah, you've read it right, now everyone can enjoy story! Dialogues, items, skills, pretty much everything is translated!

Instructions:

0. Make a backup of your Disgaea 4 JAP game (BLJS-10095), and place it somewhere, preferably on the root of the drive (there's no spacebar nor special chars problems, but it's more convinient this way), i.e - "C:\BLJS10095"

1. Donwload patcher (Pre-beta version) [Register or Login to view links] , extract it somewhere and run D4Trans.exe.

2. Ensure "Translate EBOOT" is checeked and the default START.DAT patching method is checked ("1: Glyphicate all"). Later, if you'll have some troubles you can always repatch it.

3. CLick "START!" and choose location of your Disgaea 4 dump. Patcher has a lot of fool-proff functions, so it won't accidently patch the wrong version or mess your game

NOTE: backups will be created: "START.OLD" and "EBOOT.OLD" (If you choose to patch it). Please, do NOT delete them, it may be required in future, although you can always dump your game once again.

4. Wait till everything finishes, and you'll get "Done!" message. You can now copy your game back and play it partially in English!

4* If you want English cutscenes and Main Menu, you may overwrite your's Japanese "ANM.DAT", ANM_HI.DAT", "BG.DAT", "BU.DAT", "Dis3_0.dat" with US version equivalents (if you happen to also have an US version of the game)

EXTRA - START.DAT PATCHING OPTIONS:
0: DO NOT PATCH - No patching to START.DAT will be made;
1: Glyphicate all - Default and recommended option. Best if you're starting a new game. If you have already played alpha version of this patch and would like to play with existing save (continue playing), please note, that you *may* experience some bugs (untested), although we tried hard that you won't. If you see some, please, report and repatch to one of the options below.
2: Glyphicate only talk.dat - use it if you have troubles with options above, or you want to be on the completely safe side when continuing playing from the old saves. Apart from talk.dat, other files remain as they were in alpha version.
3: SJIS-patch talk.dat - Select this if modified fonts gives crashes or freezes. All chars from talk.dat will be substituted by SJIS equivalents. Apart from talk.dat, other files remain as they were in alpha version.
4: Use alpha-version files - Uses old good alpha version files with most of the bugs fixed. Use it if the above options give you constant crashes.

NOTE: If you haven't saw any changes after patching the game, please reboot PS3, start any BD-Game (to clear the game cache) till the main menu, exit and try to load Disgaea 4 again.

NOTE2: It's still WIP, if you know/want to help us, or just say "thanks!" please do so at PS3News.com, we'll be glad!

SPECIAL THANKS to Kazekeil (for his helping hand in translation), Bakaboy (for awesome D4Pack), leenfox and necroziel (for some file translations).

KNOWN BUGS:

- None for now, except some portions of the menu not translated.

Just a heads up, so everyone knows how it's going:

I'll be working on this at least every friday for 2-4 hours.
(The current plan is doing it every mon/wed/fri for 2-4 hours, but i know i won't be able to do it all those days).

Current status: Dumping the Japanese text from eboot.elf into a .sjs file using MadEdit and JWPce, and using the first eboot.elf provided by Tidus as base, since i don't know exactly where are Tobster's translations and looking for them would actually make me waste more time. I'll use his work on the translation phase.

Dumping is actually the hardest part of the whole process, because it is mechanic and manual. Programming a way to get the text out is actually more time consuming than dumping by hand.

Translating it back again will be easy in comparison. I've stumbled upon a small problem: JWPce seems to be unable to read files (should have used notepad again... sigh) over ~100KB in size, so i'll have to strip the current dump file, which is 137KB in size to chunks of ~98KB. Also, the .jce extension used by default in JWPce has a lot of weird coding in it, so i'm having a little trouble splitting it up.

I'll post it here in case anyone can help divide the file, but even if no one can, i will just figure out a way (write a program to extract only the Japanese from the file) to get what i want.

After i'm done re-dumping it, i'll redo the translation, by myself this time. For that i'll do a rough translation based on JWPce dictionaries and my experience.

After it is done, i'll actually play the game in English (I've got it for 4 months now pretty much and never played it) to compare my translation with the official one.

Like i said before, it should be done by the end of the month.

Nope, it seems nothing more to do. Trophies are dead end. Except eboot - nothing.

Most of the textures are backgrounds, status screens and Disgaea 2 and 3 (why???) characters. All Disgaea 4 chars and animations are in different unknown format. So, it's of no big use of modding. Still, creating txf -> bmp converter should be much of a problem.

Tidus: I really don't know this easter egg. It's a leftover maybe. If you look at the dat files, there're many unused sentences too.

Back to topic: I've stopped my translation attempts and I'm waiting for the real translation by Alexmagno now. Is there any other thing to work on or to prepare at the moment?

Digging in the textures, I've found this:

Anyone knows what in the Earth is it? Or did I forgot something?

Do anyone have a mirror for the Translation patch? Multiupload seems to not be working.

Glyph method is dangerous to use on eboot, because there are a lot of executable data that can be treated as chars by mistake.

Moreover, using glyph method on translated .dat files didn't actually give more space for letters - it just made the text more narrow, thus more readable. It just substitutes 2 ANSI bytes (=2 letters) for fake-glyph which is also 2 bytes, but has the width of 1 kanji (=more narrow then 2 actuals ANSI symbols).

In addition, to glyphicate smth we have to have 2 files - original untranslated japanese one and hand-made translated another one. So, we need to translate smth before glyphication anyways.

We can experiment with this after translation, but IMO touching eboot in an unappropriated way can lead to crash. But who knows.

Some clarification for those wondering.

I second that the work done by Tobster is an excellent one, picking up that thing. The same can't be said to me, I've hit the stone wall / dead end twice now, once with trophies, secondly - with textures - ended where I've began. I've discovered some modding possibilities though, if anyone interested in modding Disgaea 4 actually, give me the sign and I can work further on texture/char mods tutorials.
