stoker25 via PSX-Scene has released CFWLoad v1.0 with source code, which he states is essentially a clone of
JaicraB's
PS3 USB Custom Firmware Loader with a few differences for people with USBs that have different numbers.

CFWLoad v1.0 for PS3
For those interested in
modifying the PlayStation 3 registry files, previously he released a
PS3 Registry xRegistry.sys File Editor followed by
PS3 Multi Tool v0.2.
To quote on his latest release:
It's a clone of JaicraB's USB FIRM LOADER, with a few differences for people like me with USBs that have different numbers.
Features:
• Choose what USB to use!
• Redirect dev_flash to usb
• Redirect app_home to usb
• Dump LV2 kernel and mount points
...along with all the source code that does it
NOTE: You need a payload with peek and poke syscalls (PL3 dev has this).
Usage:
• X - (Un)Patch /dev_flash as usb
• Square - (Un)Patch /app_home as usb
• Select - Dump lv2.bin & mounts.bin to usb
• Up/Down - Change USB
• Triangle - Exit
The dev_flash files have to be on the root of the USB drive to work, e.g. if E:/ is your drive, you should have E:/vsh, E:/vsh/modules, etc...
Make a PS3_GAME folder on your USB for the thing in the Game menu to work. App has some bugs, but it is my first PS3 program.

It would be nice to have the application running on the PS3 with it's own custom interface. I use PS3MS myself and it is pretty good, however there are drawbacks. Namely scanning for new files on share drives is a little wonky. It's sometimes quicker to reboot PS3 MS in order to see new files. Also there is the lag that is takes to transcode and the occasional hiccup in 1080p playback.
A local ap could have a local buffer and use that to enable good 1080p over wireless. Also I would love to have the XBMC interface. scrolling with R/L being able to easily FF through intros, etc.
Is mkv support that necessary with PS3 media center avalible? it works really well...
