Guide: PS3 RAF File Mods - Bring on the Custom PS3 Boot Logos!

Category: PS3 Hacks & JailBreak  By: Ihatecompvir - (ps3news.com)
Tags: ps3 guides ps3 tutorials ps3 raf file mods ps3 custom boot logos ps3 boot logo mods

125w ago - I just figured out how to create a custom PS3 boot logo for those interested by simply modifying a PlayStation 3 RAF file. Here is a sample. Replace coldboot.raf in flash with this one (or use the CFW Loader or whatever) and reboot PS3 and see your new Bootlogo!

Download: Coldboot.raf PS3 File (Sample)

Apparently this DOESN'T work for HD people yet. I don't know what happens on an HD screen, I replaced the HD file with LOL but I don't know if it will work. I'm writing a full tutorial on this, so expect it soon.

Edit: My guide is now posted below! Here's basically how I did it:

Used SimplyZip (http://www.paehl.de/english.php) to decompress the RAF starting at the Zlib header (78DA) to the end of the file.

Now that you have the RAF file decompressed, it's basically a P3T (yes, Sony are that lazy) After this, you just need to run it through P3T Decompiler or whatever because you can't actually get the source files for the logo (no converter will convert them properly and I can't manually get them to show) you need to create a DDS File with these sizes:

  • Any gtf with _sd in the name - Standard Definition - 240 x 120
  • Any gtf without _sd in the name - High Definition - 700 x 350

The file sizes:

  • HD Files - 486,656 Bytes
  • SD Files - 57,088 Bytes

After making a DDS you feel is appropriate, you need to get it into the GTF format. There is a gtf/dds tool in the PS3 SDK that does this but I am not allowed to share it because I believe it is illegal. If this gets popular, a tool will almost certainly be written which will not be illegal.

After having your gtf, you'll need to create a file with the appropriate size as shown above. Go into the gtf in a hex editor and copy it. Go into the file with the size you just made and paste-write it into the file (some hex editors dont support this, its basically pasting but overwriting)

Save it. Most of your work is done. Now you must take the original gtf, copy it all in hex, then search for it in the raf. When it finds the match, just go to the beginning of the match, and paste-write. It should completely overwrite the gtf and the thing you should then see is the beginning of the next gtf. You've now written a new file into the raf.

From here, you just compress the raf with SimplyZip, then take the compressed file simplyzip gives you and insert it into the original raf. Most likely, the raf will have gained in size. This is 100% normal, as the original Sony files didn't have much in them due to the fact that is mostly empty files with a PS logo in one solid color.

Sorry if no one understood this tutorial, I wrote it in a hurry lol.

anyone mind listing a bunch of pictures as well to use. Would be really really cool to have some sick looking pictures to load up too!!

I remember for some wii games people modded them to say "weed" instead of wii and have a picture of mario smoking a joint LOL

Quick Update: I extracted the coldboot.raf of the 2.70, 2.76 and 2.80 fw and they has the new "PS3" logo and not the old "Sony Computer Entertaiment", weird.

I also extract the 1.10, 2.36 and 2.60 and they don't have any coldboot.raf inside.

I used Geohot's depkg tool to extract the dev flash of firmware 2.30 and no file called coldboot.raf exists.

So in theory to get the old "Sony Computer Entertainment" back, you have to edit it.

Hey, how did you get it to work? I'm using Windows+Cygwin+Includes.

Edit: Guys, i extracted the fw 2.76 and i started to look on some files to bring back the PlayStation 3 logo that used to appear before a game start (< 3.0 fw).

I did a quick search and i found 1 file that are connected with the gameboot_stereo.ac3 (the sound of the PlayStation 3 logo) and coldboot_stereo.ac3 (the startup sound). I replaced this file on my 3.41 PS3 and i added the gameboot_stereo.ac3 too and i realize that after this modification the PS3 takes a little more to start some game. About 1~2 seconds before the XMB get out and the game appear.

I looked on YouTube and it takes exactly the same time than the old fw with the logo native on its system. In simple words, the logo is parcially working but there is no video and audio, just the time that it takes before the game start.

I noticed that because the glitters of the Original theme keeps "floating" on the screen after i start a game on XMB and about 1~2 seconds later they disappear and the game start.

I made a zip containing both sounds, custom_render_plugin.rco (the file with informations about gameboot) and the custom_render_plugin.sprx (please, be careful with this file).

Also, i put the coldboot.raf of the 2.76 fw on this .zip file, but i don't know why it does not work. I replaced it on my PS3 but it shows the normal PS3, and not the old Sony Computer Entertaiment.

PS: You are not supposed to replace your 3.41 (or another) files with these one, i did put them here in case of someone want to study it too. Again, DO NOT REPLACE YOUR CURRENT FW WITH THESE FILES.

I'll keep studying it, but is late here and i'm in a zombie state, i need to sleep.

Thanks!

Sorry about my english, it stills not good.

Do we have to edit and go through all those stages just to put the old bootup back?
