Rebug PS3 CFW Boot OtherOS++ & OtherOS Prep Tool Released

Category: PS3 CFW & MFW  By: rayman1ray - (rebug.me)
Tags: rebug ps3 cfw ps3 boot otheros++ ps3 otheros prep tool cyberskunk ps3 ps3 hacks

105w ago - Today PlayStation 3 hacker Cyberskunk has released a Rebug PS3 CFW Boot OtherOS++ and OtherOS Prep Tool for Linux fans alongside a Rebug 3.41.2 & 3.55.1 Custom Firmware (which allows PSN access using this guide via SP-INT) and details on how to add OtherOS++ support.

From their page: Boot OtherOS++ does what it says. One click easy. OtherOS Prep Tool is used to prepare your system vflash and install petitboot ready to install Linux. IT DOES NOT INSTALL LINUX. For tutorials and videos on how to install Linux head over to gitbrew.org.

OtherOS Prep Tool is based off of graf_chokolo’s and glevand’s source and is a one or two step solution to getting petitboot up and running and on your way to installing Linux on to USB or PS3 Hard Disk. At the moment it only supports 3.55 but we will add support for lower firmware soon.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 16MB NOR PS3 (Model CECHH or Higher)
  • 3.55 OtherOS++ enabled firmware installed

(If you want to use REBUG 3.55.1 grab PS3MFW Builder 0.2 Portable from here with the tasks pre-selected to add OtherOS++ support)

FEATURES

  • One Step Prep if installing OtherOS to USB Hard Disk
  • Two Step Prep if installing OtherOS to PS3 Hard Disk
  • Resize vflash to 6 different sizes (Original, 11GB, 22,GB, 43GB, 65GB and 83GB)
  • Create or Delete vflash region 5, 6 and 7 separately
  • Create or Delete ALL vflash regions at once
  • dtbImage.ps3.bin included in pkg (no need to have it ready on USB)
  • Install different dtbImage.ps3.bin from USB
  • Checks that vflash region 7 create matches vflash size
  • Detects and displays current vflash size on start up
  • Auto matches new size to current size on start up

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE BLACK SCREEN IS NORMAL

In most cases when the PS3 auto reboots you will get a black screen telling you to plug in your controller and press the PS button. THIS IS NORMAL. Press the PS button and on the next screen press the PS button again. The PS3 will continue to reboot.

THE EASY WAY:
IF INSTALLING LINUX TO USB HARD DRIVE:

STEP 1: COMPLETE VFLASH AND PETITBOOT INSTALLATION (PS3 Hard Drive WILL NOT be Formatted)
Run OtherOS Prep Tool
Press START+SELECT.. You’re done!!
(PS3 will beep when it starts and again when it finishes)
(System will auto reboot)
Run Boot OtherOS++ to launch Petitboot

IF INSTALLING LINUX TO PS3 HARD DISK:
STEP 1: RESIZE VFLASH (WARNING – PS3 Hard Disk WILL BE Formatted)
Run OtherOS Prep Tool
Use UP or DOWN to select a NEW VFLASH SIZE
Press L1+TRIANGLE to resize vflash (PS3 will beep when it finishes)
Exit OtherOS Prep Tool using the PS button. (PS3 will auto reboot after exit and ask you to format)
Select YES.

STEP 2: COMPLETE VFLASH AND PETITBOOT INSTALLATION
Run OtherOS Prep Tool
Press START+SELECT.. You’re done!! (PS3 will beep when it starts and again when it finishes) (System will auto reboot)
Run Boot OtherOS++ to launch Petitboot
NOTE: RESIZE VFLASH

If resizing vflash back to original size, petitboot will remain on vflash and you will still be able to run OtherOS from USB Hard Disk.

NOTE: COMPLETE VFLASH AND PETITBOOT INSTALLATION

If new size is smaller than current size, vflash region 7 WILL be created and Hard Drive WILL be resized as well. If new size is the same as current size, vflash region 7 WILL be created and resizing WILL NOT be run to avoid unnecessary reformatting. If new size is bigger than current size, install WILL NOT run you will be asked to resize first.

OTHER OPTIONS:
CREATE/DELETE VFLASH REGIONS:

Use LEFT or RIGHT to select which region to Delete.
Choose from 5, 6, 7 and ALL
Press R1+SQUARE to DELETE selected region.
Press L1+CIRCLE to CREATE selected region. (PS3 will beep when it finishes)

NOTE: CREATE/DELETE VFLASH REGIONS

When you have finished modifying you vflash regions press the PS button to exit. PS3 will auto reboot. When deleting ALL regions, they are deleted in the following order 7, 6 then 5. If a region does not exist it moves on to the next one. When creating ALL regions, as a precaution, all regions are deleted first and then created. If new size and current size do not match or vflash is original size, vflash region 7 WILL NOT be created to avoid mismatched vflash/region 7 size.

INSTALL PETITBOOT TO VFLASH:

Press L1+CROSS to INSTALL Petitboot to vflash region 5 (PS3 will beep when it starts and again when it finishes)

NOTE: INSTALL PETITBOOT TO VFLASH The dtbImage.ps3.bin (Petitboot) that is included in this release is the latest one from gitbrew.org as of the 17th of May 2011, committed on the 9th of May 2011. If you want to install a different Petitboot put it on the root of USB.

HOW TO ADD OTHEROS++ SUPPORT:

REBUG 3.41.2 & REBUG 3.55.1
Both Rebug 3.41.2 and 3.55.1 have all the features you have come to expect from a CFW/MFW plus Package Manager, Rebug Selector and all the debug features of the last Rebug release and none of the bugs.

There is also a new directory in dev_flash called rebug which has another directory in it packages. It is in this directory that you will find Rebug_Selector_1.2.pkg and BDEMU.pkg (3.55) or Hermes_V4C_Rebugged.pkg (3.41). These can be installed using the PS3 HDD option in Package Manager.

CREATE OTHEROS++ ENABLED REBUG FW:

If you want to OtherOS++ enable REBUG we have provided the .tcl task file for patching the Lv1 Hyperviser with PS3MFW Builder 0.2. It is the EXACT patch_lv1.tcl from gitbrew.org minus the lv1 memory mapping as it is already patched in REBUG. We can not take any credit for the task file or PS3MFW Builder 0.2 Portable. We have provided them at the bottom of this post for your convenience as we didn’t feel releasing a new PUP just to add these patches was necessary.

1: Add the .tcl file to the tasks folder of PS3MFW Builder 0.2. It will appear as OtherOS++ Lv1 Hypervisor patches for REBUG in the task list.
2: Deselect ALL tasks except OtherOS++ Lv1 Hypervisor patches for REBUG.
3: Use REBUG firmware as your input firmware.
4: Select output directory and filename.
5: Click on Build MFW
6: Rename output PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and install on the PS3.

OR

1: Download PS3MFW Bulder 0.2 Portable Win32 from the bottom of this post (All of the tasks have been pre-selected for you).
2: Click on ps3mfw.exe
3: Use REBUG firmware as your input firmware.
4: Select output directory and filename.
5: Click on Build MFW
6: Rename output PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and install on the PS3.

Your new REBUG PUP will have the same OtherOS++ compatibility as OtherOS++ CFW.

INSTALL:
Rebug 3.41.2 and 3.55.1 and can be installed over the same version OFW/CFW/MFW on any model PS3 through the XMB or Recovery Mode and Rebug 3.41.2 can be installed in Service Mode if needed to downgrade OFW 3.50.

UNINSTALL:
Rebug 3.41.2 and 3.55.1 can be uninstalled with the same version OFW/CFW/MFW on any model PS3 through the XMB or Recovery Mode.

PACKAGE MANAGER
Package Manager is a replacement for the standard ★ Install Package Files option under Game in the XMB. It allows for the install and deletion of .pkg files from ‘dev_hdd0/packages’, ‘dev_usb/packages’ and the standard ‘★ Install Package Files’ locations. In addition to this, your downloaded PSN content will appear under this menu instead of cluttering your ‘Game’ menu with uninstalled content.

USAGE:
Navigate to Game in your XMB and click on ★ Package Manager (It will be where ‘★ Install Package Files’ usually is). You will find three options.

★ PlayStation®Network Content
Manage your downloaded PlayStation®Network Content.

★ Install Package Files
INSTALL package files from Storage Devices and your PS3.

PS3™ Hard Disk – (dev_hdd0/packages)
Package Folder – (dev_usb/packages)
Standard Package Location – (Standard ★ Install Package Files locations)

NOTE: The Install All Packages is only available by pressing the TRIANGLE button when the Standard Package Location option is highlighted because the PS3 will only install ALL packages from the root of a storage device as of the moment.

★ Delete Package Files
DELETE package files from Storage Devices and your PS3.

PS3™ Hard Disk – (dev_hdd0/packages)
Package Folder – (dev_usb/packages)
Standard Package Location – (Standard ★ Install Package Files locations)

DELETING FILES:
1: Highlight the file you would like to delete and press TRIANGLE. The sidebar should appear.
2: Press CROSS on either Unlink or Unlink(Folder) (Both do the same thing for now).

REBUG SELECTOR:
Included – Install using PS3 HDD option in Package Manager.

Rebug Selector is a tool for switching XMB and menus. When you run the tool you will see displayed what MODE, XMB and DEBUG MENU you are using. You will also see that AUTO REBOOT is set to OFF – FAST MENU SWITCHING ACTIVE, which means when you choose an option from DEBUG MENU SELECT the PS3 will exit back to the XMB automaticly speeding up the menu switching process. As soon as you choose an option from either MODE SELECT or XMB SELECT the AUTO REBOOT will set to ON – SYSTEM WILL REBOOT ON EXIT and the user must manually exit the tool using the ‘ingame XMB’ once they are satisfied with their selections. This is so the vsh.self changes can take effect.

MODE SELECT:
Switches between NORMAL and REBUG mode

NORMAL MODE:
NORMAL mode is the default mode after installing Rebug. It uses the DEBUG XMB and allows switching between the two different ★Debug Settings menus.

NOTE: NORMAL mode MUST be set if you wish to reinstall official firmware through the XMB.

REBUG MODE:
REBUG mode sets the PS3 to the latest available version spoof (updatable in the future) and allows swapping between RETAIL and DEBUG XMB in addition to switching between the two different ★Debug Settings menus.

Press L1+CROSS to set: [NORMAL MODE]
Press L1+CIRCLE to set: [REBUG MODE]

XMB SELECT:
This option only works in REBUG mode and lets you select either the RETAIL or DEBUG XMB.

Press R1+CROSS to use: [RETAIL XMB]
Press R1+CIRCLE to use: [DEBUG XMB]

DEBUG MENU SELECT:
Gives you the choice of the ★Debug Settings menu from retail (CEX) or debug (DEX) firmware.

Press R2+CROSS to use: [DEBUG SETTINGS: MENU 1] (CEX)
Press R2+CIRCLE to use: [DEBUG SETTINGS: MENU 2] (DEX)

CREATE PACKAGE FOLDER ON PS3:
For use with Package Manager. This option will exit automaticly if AUTO REBOOT is set to off.

Press SELECT to create [dev_hdd0/packages]

NOTE: No matter what XMB or DEBUG MENU you are using, the debug options you have running will remain active.

EXTRA INFO: Rebug Selector DOES NOT copy any files to dev_flash when performing it’s tasks, instead it renames (Much safer and much much faster). All the files are already installed on dev_flash and the tool has more than a dozen checks to make sure nothing goes wrong, including a check to see if it is being used on Rebug firmware. Trying to run Rebug Selector on firmware other than Rebug will cause the tool to auto exit before the user gets to make a choice or see anything on the screen at all for that matter.

There are lots of things for you to experiment with and discover so have some fun and don’t take things too seriously. It is only a PS3.

Enjoy.. Cyberskunk.

Apparently people claim to be using it to go online with the old DNS bypass methods using an SP-INT account created for Rebug CFW... whether it actually works or not is another story although a guide is available here if you wish to give it a try.
