Video: Sony Invites PlayStation Fans to See the Future February 20th

16w ago - Following up on their previous hints, rumors and specs, today Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman invites PlayStation fans to see the future in an event scheduled for February 20th, 2013.

Below is their Be The First To Know video teaser into the future of PlayStation, with Sony planning a big announcement at 6PM EST on February 20th, 2013 just ahead of its Destination PlayStation event.

Currently all fans can do is speculate whether Sony planning to announce details on its next-gen plans ahead of E3 2013 with an early unveiling of the PS4 / Orbis / PlayStation 4 console.

The Wall Street Journal reports that not only will Sony debut its next-gen console at the event, but that it will be released later this year. To quote:

"Sony's device will be released later this year, these people [familiar with the matter] said, and will spar against Microsoft's own machine, which is also expected to be released by the holidays," wrote the publication.

The new system will incorporate "more social gaming aspects" and be more focused on "changes in how users interact with the machine" versus "hardware improvements," according to the outlet.

At one point, the PlayStation manufacturer considered removing the system's disc drive in favor for an all-digital console, said The Wall Street Journal. But concerns over game file size and slow internet connections made them scrap the idea. Microsoft is said have made a similar decision.

Finally, according to TheSixthAxis.com a PlayStation.com redirect suggests PS4 is indeed the final name.

To quote: "Visit http://us.playstation.com/ps4/ and it takes you to the PlayStation front page. Visit anything else, for example /ps5 or /orbis, and it doesn't, you get a 404 error.

What can this trickery possibly mean? Well, apart from the fact that somebody at Sony knows how to set up a proper redirect, it strongly suggests that Orbis is out of the window and Sony are sticking to prior experience: the PS4 will be - wait for it - called the PS4.

Orbis, then, was just the codename, as we suspected." As always, time will tell!

$428 in USD? Yeah I'm pretty sure that's not the final price for the USA version. It will cost more than that here in the USA. I payed $600 for the PS3 when it came out. So.. yeah.

Now, PS2 games were like $50, PS3 games $60-70 and sometimes more lol. If PS4 games go higher than $70 I'm not going to bother with it at all and just build my self a gaming pc. At least i hope that they continue with the playstation plus features. Hoping that Sony also puts out something to stop the kiddos from playing matures games. Seriously...

Will the controllers stay the same? I really hope they do.

I'm sure they will be expensive at first. Then like all consoles and games they will drop. You know the price of the game depends on how much work went into creating it. I would not be shocked if they make 3D TV games. I could see them costing $60 per title

Following up on the previous Sony PlayStation 4 rumors, today a well-known Japanese newspaper is http://blog.esuteru.com/archives/6911065.html that the PS4 (Orbis) is rumored to cost 40,000 Yen (around $430 / £300) and arrive in Japan and North America this year alongside some additional rumors from http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXNASDD0701Z_X00C13A2000000/ below.

To quote from GamingEverything.com (linked above): "The publication writes today that the PS4 will feature Gaikai cloud tech and will offer special social elements in which you can discuss things with friends while playing games.

Asahi, a well-known newspaper in Japan, is reporting that the next PlayStation will cost more than 40,000 yen. The publication also adds to previous speculation that the console will be made available this year in North America and Japan.

40,000 yen may not mean much to consumers overseas. Converting between currencies, that would be about $428 in USD and roughly 317 Euros.

Two things to keep in mind: 1) Asahi says Sony’s new home console will cost more than 40,000 yen and 2) prices tend to see adjustments in different territories rather than straight conversions.

And of course, Asahi’s report should only be treated as speculation for now."

From Nikkei, roughly translated: "Enhancing network features Sony released later this year, "PS4"

(SCE) will be released in accordance with the holiday season this year "(PS) 4 PlayStation" new product of home-use game machine stationary Sony Computer Entertainment. Become the next generation of "PS3" current machine released in 2006. AC features to enhance the network function, discuss with friends while playing the game.

Presented at the event "PlayStation Meeting" to be held in New York on the 20th. I take advantage of cloud technology outside world game distribution company that was acquired by the United States about 30 billion yen last summer.

"Cell" chip has been developed to be mounted on the PS3 and Sony will not put in the next generation, it seems to adopt the development of semiconductor companies."

Update: According to http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/business/industries/technology/article3691304.ece, Sony is considering pricing PS4 at about £300 ($400 USD) stating the following (via http://www.vg247.com/2013/02/18/ps4-to-cost-300-according-to-leaked-documents-report/):

Sony is expected to reveal PS4 at its ‘PlayStation Meeting’ event on Wednesday. Leaked documents and sources have claimed that the console will cost £300 at launch.

According to The Times, “leaked internal documents” confirm the price-tag which - if true - mark a significant reduction from the PS3′s original price-tag of £425.
