Some may recall Sony quietly reissued PS3 Firmware 3.41 to rectify issues for PlayStation 3 HDD upgraders, and today Examiner.com (linked above) reports the same remedy may be necessary in the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.56.

To quote: "According to users on [Register or Login to view links] and [Register or Login to view links] Forum, the 3.56 firmware prevents the newer PlayStation 3 models (with 16 MB flash) from being upgradeable to a new hard disk drive. The following models have been affected:

Original PlayStation 3 Model:

Slim PlayStation 3 Model:

• CECH-20..A
• CECH-20..B
• CECH-21..A
• CECH-21..B
• CECH-250.A
• CECH-250.B
• CECH-250.A
• CECH-250.B
• CECH-251.A
• CECH-251.B

Apparently this was an old bug that has appeared before in a previous firmware update that was eventually fixed. Hopefully, Sony can fix it again in a timely matter."

Dude, I think that both HD's were screwed. Buy a new one & try with 3.15 again. Also, check your firmware/media using md5/sha1 sums. There won't be a problem. Had my old fat with a 1TB for a few months now.

I have a ps3 80gb cechk01 and yesterday my hard drive crapped out on me. I pulled a 160gb hdd out of a laptop and threw it in the ps3. It reformatted it and prompted me for version 3.15 or newer. I tried 3.15 on a flash drive as well as 3.41 and neither worked but when I put 3.56 on it I was able to load it with no problem. i read this forum before I replaced it so I was a little nervous, but obviously had no choice since mine was dead.

I installed a 1TB in the PS3 a while back and removed it for a lap top I have, at the moment I have a 640gb installed and have yet to see anything happen but I have to say I will be giving up the PS3 if I can't use what I have now. I'll be damned if their going to run my life after shelling out $500 + on the system and controllers or what ever else I've pumped into their pockets.

If they wanna block pirating then fine I really don't give a damn to be honest, their ignorance started when they stripped away the otherOS and stayed away from DRM because it means some one else will have their hands in Sony's pockets. This all comes down to greed and I won't have any part of it. All they had to do is allow home brew and DRM the software but instead their setting them selves up for a class action law suit and I hope they lose their shirts over it.
