245w ago - Sony of Japan has revealed a new service called Life-X which enables users to manage their own private digital content such as photos and videos though a Web browser. The service is set to start in October 2008.
"Toward our goal to make 90% of Sony's products support network function, the service will help increase the added-value and convenience of Sony's products," said
Nobuki Kurita, executive deputy president of Sony Marketing.
To quote: The service is slated to start in mid October 2008. Ahead of that, the company will disclose the beta version and allow 500 pre-registered users selected in a drawing to try it from Sept 25, 2008, the company said.
As the aims of introducing Life-X, Sony Marketing cited the following reasons: (1) to enable users to manage their private content on the Internet and (2) to allow them enjoy sharing the content they are managing.
Life-X can manage photos, videos, blogs, text memos and web clip content. Each user is allowed to manage up to 500 Mbytes of photos. It can also manage content on other Web services than Life-X. Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and some other Web services run by other companies will be linked to Life-X when it is started.
Life-X allows users to share their content with other users as well. For example, "By setting photos of a child shot with a mobile phone as shared content, they can be viewed on a Sony "Bravia" LCD TV in the grandparents' home at a distant place," Kurita said.
The Web site can be browsed with PCs, mobile phones, Internet-compatible TVs, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Life-X is available for any products featuring Web browsing capability, even if they are not Sony's products, according to Sony Marketing.
