ok if your PC is OFF it cannot be booted remotely nor can any data be retrieved from it. If your computer is asleep and and your hardware supports "Wake On Lan" then it can be powered up but it's a pretty secure system and not really how data is stolen (it's highly obvious when your computer mysteriously boots itself lol) More often than not if your PC is infected with anything it'll run for a few days msg home any data recieved then remove itself. Or even basic http redirects have a high rate of success against people that can't tell the difference. But the general idea is that they are transparent so the end user has no idea it has happened.
One of the simplest ways of checking on a windows machine if anything untoward is communicating on outside networks is to close all apps running that access the internet and run 'netstat' from the cmd prompt every now and again. It'll give you a list of any open internet connections, where they're connecting too and the process thats called it. It's normal to see 10 or less on a windows machine with all obvious applications closed (the 10 will be updaters, AV and things like that) 10 -20 and there maybe something wrong (but you can always lookup the addresses for anything suspicious), 20+ you definitely have an issue. Simple and free.
I know there have been programs/scripts that have been placed on my pc automatically and have executed automatically (and im no expert) but can something like booting up some1's comp occur from a remote location if the power's off?
If so haha then I would really be motivated to go back to school to get some kind of computer science degree. I know there are agencies or individuals or individuals not acting in an agency's best interest that do things through web networking traffic but in all my year's as a moderate end-user (that's how i would describe myself) i've never had anything like what i wrote above (about booting a comp from a remote location) ever occur to me... Or identity theft...
I am more than happy for MSoft to watch everything I do and every other internet user, including the US government and UK government watching me. I find comfort knowing this, because of terrorists.
I also find comfort in now knowing from the reaction of the PS3 consumers that we have the full support of some of the best ethical hackers and not so ethical hackers on our side, who continue looking for Sony exploits, including their use of unethical unauthorized monitoring within our home networks, and some businesses.
I feel even if you have a PS3 it the canteen on the works network thats a bad thing, because the PS3 has access to all the users network shares though the uses of plug and play, and media shire port 1900 and god know what else, and with respects to the IT Dept, they don't always think about locking games units out from the network when its sat far away in some canteen, forgetting its not only on at works break times it can auto start in the down time hours as well, updating ?
Remote auto starting has been possible for a long time now, as so many of us know, so when I plug anything into the network now I test it 1st because I know it may have been exploited in some way, giving remote access to my network maybe, regardless if I have modded it or it came of the shelf, I still test it.
I found this out years ago with CFW for the good old Dbox2 when I flashed modded firmware giving me a IDE hard drive connection for better backup and recording.
The Dbox2 also ran Linux and Homebrew, but one cfw I tried once would talk to the mother-ship, so to speak were the custom firmware came from. This also applies to cfw for docsys modems as well, and still dose in some cases.
So now I'm going to put Geo's cfw on the two girls PS3's like mine, blackbox ftp, and have done with it.
