Sony PS3 Worldwide Sales Cross the 30 Million Threshold

177w ago - VGChartz.com (linked above) reports that Sony PS3 worldwide sales have now crossed the 30 million threshold, which many are attributing to several factors including the late August PlayStation 3 Slim release, the $299 PS3 price cut and recent Final Fantasy XIII sales.

Approximately five months ago, the PS3 hit the 24 million point, which means in a little less than half a year six million PS3 entertainment systems were sold!

These latest weekly sales numbers show that PlayStation 3 has reached another milestone, and that Sony has indeed made great progress in closing the gap between PS3 and the Xbox 360 console.

To quote: "Thanks to Final Fantasy XIII, the Slim, the price cut, and new marketing, the PlayStation 3 has not only shattered expectations once again, it is ahead of it's closest competitor in EU, sells 1 million units Worldwide, and has now crossed the 30 million unit milestone! Congratulations PlayStation 3!"

Is there another source for this besides vgchartz? I really don't know where they get their info and i had the impression they were estimating most of the time.

Well, if VGChartz is to be believed then:

PS3: 37 months 30.10m units sold 813,513.51351351351351351351351351 per month
360: 49 months 35.80m units sold 730,612.2448979591836734693877551 per month
Wii: 37 months 62.59m units sold 1,691,621.6216216216216216216216216 per month

That's pretty amazing. That's 82901.2686155543298400441257584 more PS3's sold per month than 360's. And, that's more Wii's sold per month than PS3's and 360's combined, but who's surprised?

I'm sorry about the decimals, I just figured that they may actually make a difference, especially if somebody wanted to do their own math.

Good point CyanCaze. The other thing to consider is what the average spend by each owner is per year on games and accessories. The stereotype that I have is that the Wii is very popular at first but a lot of people stop playing it after a few weeks. Considering that manufacturers supposedly don't make much on each console (or make a loss), I guess spend on games etc is also important to consider.

The PS3 has sold 30 million since release in November 2006. 30 million / 36 months = about 0.8 mil per month. It has sold 3 million since 30 July 2009, which is roughly the same. Seems like steady sales.

Wiki can be edited by anyone, and since that is monitored by a specific person, I believe they just haven't updated it yet. Also back in October the 360 announced that it sold 34M units.

Worldwide sales figures

1. Wii – 50.39 million, as of 31 October 2009
2. Xbox 360 – 31.20 million,as of 27 January 2009
3. PlayStation 3 – 27 million, as of 30 July 2009

The Xbox 360 figures are quite old (even the PS3 ones as well) but they certainly show the Wii is the biggest seller.

The PS3 has sold 30 million since release in November 2006. 30 million / 36 months = about 0.8 mil per month. It has sold 3 million since 30 July 2009, which is roughly the same. Seems like steady sales.
