256w ago - The PlayStation 3 is "still in its early adopter phase", Sony has claimed, despite the console being out for over two years.
Speaking in an interview with Gamasutra, John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, said that the kind of person who was interested in the PS3 was "tech-oriented" and that for them, the console's main appeal was its "multi-functionality".
Sony's PS3 has come under fire from a number of analysts in recent months, many of whom have pointed towards its high price as explanation of its current third place sales position behind the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360.
Sony, for its part, has continued to resist calls for a price cut, pointing towards the PS3's high-value as a Blu-ray player and powerful games machine.

Well, most of the interview is about the PS2. The PS2 caught the DVD bandwagon, and that helped a lot, drawing in more games early on. The PS3 is trying to create the "Blu-ray bandwagon", though, and that's a tougher proposition.
The PS3 probably is somewhat limited in its demographic appeal. By itself, it's a nice game platform, but - at least for now - similar gaming experiences are available for less with the 360. People who only care about games will go for the lower price (everybody's price-conscious in an economy like this).
People who care about HD media and games get more value out of the PS3, but it's still an open question if there's enough of that group (or if that group's growing fast enough) to make the PS3 anything like as successful as the PS2.
