Sega Leak Reveals PSN to Bring PS2 & DreamCast Games to PS3

279w ago - According to Edge Online (linked above), Sega has leaked a confidential [Register or Login to view links] (removed now) of a meeting with SCEA held in August by accidently uploading it to their public FTP site.

Among other things, the document states a March 2010 release for Sony's new Motion Controller in Japan with the ambition of selling 4-5 million units world-wide. No Prices or Bundles are mentioned though, yet.

Furthermore, and for many of you maybe even more interesting, the document states that Sony wants to introduce a PS2 emulator for the PS3, allowing them to sell DreamCast games and "all PS2 titles on PSN".

Unfortunately it doesn't mention any further details or the possibility to play PS2 game discs.

To quote: We've contacted Sony and Sega for comment and have reprinted the document in question in its entirety below:

SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 - DRAFT FOR COMMENTS

Objectives of Meeting
Dyer agreed to regular quarterly meetings with SOA

Sony PS3
• SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year
• Big announcement back half of year they can't talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)
• SCEA commented on indexing between PS3 and 360 SKUs, should be around 2:1 to garner most favorable treatment.

Motion Controller
• Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
• No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
• Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
• SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
• Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
• Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability - think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.

Alpha Protocol
• Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. "Mass Effect felt more RPG."
• Review notes sent to John Merlino a few weeks prior. After meeting Gerald mentioned AP is a high priority for his team.

Planet 51
• Sell in of PS3 SKU - SCEA noted that other movie titles on PS3 had underperformed as well (inc. Transformers) this cycle.
• Dyer suggests contacting Susan at Walmart and asking what she wants in the pack to sell this SKU (movie tix etc)
• Other possibilities are Hybrid movie disc (BD 25 or 50 with Game and Movie on same disc).

Bayonetta
• Collectors edition with Bayonetta Action Figure
• Novo recommended launching PSN demo around Xmas based off a Jan 5th Ship date with 2-3 week run out to launch.
• 3-4 weeks is usually ideal demo timing with fresh content every week leading up to launch (trailers, insider video about PG heritage, video blogs).

Vancouver 2010
• HOME, Olympic destination would garner a lot of positive attention from SCEA
• Should be doing same with Bayonetta, Marvel etc. Easy to launch in all territories.
• HOME merchandizing opportunities (clothes etc).

Sonic Racing
• Open to DLC to differentiate PS3 SKU - not ratchet and clank but other characters
o maybe characters from Rare or Fable universes

Yakuza
• Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).
• Might need to localize menus at least with subtitles.
• SCEA interested in helping on MKTG side if they can have period of exclusivity.

AVP
• Another great HOME candidate
• AVP avatars
• Hybrid BD disc with movie

Iron Man 2
• Great candidate for HOME space - explore Tony Stark's lab etc.
• Should have one for Marvel in general.

PSU2
• Could do bundle at GameStop with PSP 30-35K units on UMD, Go, or both.

Valkyria 1937
• Could bundle with PSP as well.

Vanquish and Aliens: CM
• Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassin's Creed for good examples).
• If we offer that SCEA would be really interested in having us at their booth next E3.

Thor
SCEA would like a look at the code soon.

Sonic Anniversary
• Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.
• "Best of Sonic" for around $99.
• SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania's flip it over/backwards)

PS2 Emulator for PS3
• SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
• For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads - similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc...

London Olympics
• Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration.

DC Digital Titles
• If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they're interested in having exclusively.
• If we give them a long period of exclusivity they'll give us more marketing support.

PSP Titles
• For SKU differentiation it's best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
• Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin's Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet - all massive franchises.
• SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat.

As crazy as it sounds, the PS3 BD drive might be too fast - if you recall how the GD rom drive worked, essentially it ran at half speed (which, doubled the capacity) - would be cool if they could get the disks working, but well, I really doubt that would happen.

I've still got my dreamcast but it bit the dust a long time ago.

They have to put powerstone 1 and 2 on psn and maybe add an online feature? Used to love playing that with a few mates round and a few beers.

Think also....

Sonic adventure 1 and 2
Resident evil code veronica

....would go down well and that the dreamcast controls would work well on the ps3 controller.

This whole story reminds me of the PSP. There Sony added a PSX emulator with firmware 3.00. It was supposed to only work with downloaded PSX games from the PSN. Back then Dark_Alex found a way to convert normal PSX disc images into the appropriate format for the PSP emulator.

I would think that it should be easy to construct a similar Poploader for PS2 games on the PS3, once it gets hacked. Sony would make a first step into that direction with the emulator.

I had a PS1 in the DC days, and a PS2, I am comfortable that I played all those games a sufficient amount that I can comfortably put them to rest and move on. I'm waiting on titles from japan to make it over first. If they brought them over, I'd pay for them, and they wouldn't need to make ps2 games work. I want new content personally.

Seriously not everyone got a chance to play all the titles (most of us didnt) and neither we got a chance to play them enough. This year for example I played for the first time chrono trigger and last year for the first time final fantasy vii. I didnt play a lot of great titles, I did play many but not all and certanly not enough legendary games.

My ps3 is bc and I really would like to see ps2 games on the psn its cheap, easy and confortable.

I would be well pleased if this news is true, especially if they choose 2 give the games a resolution boost to make them look good on an HDTV

Everyone assumes Sony removed BC so they could profit on PSN, but tell me this. If that was their strategy from the start, why leave PS1 disc reading in all models of the PS3?

Look at it this way: The US 60gb had both the GS (GPU) and EE (CPU). the software emulated 80gb still had the GS (GPU), only the EE (CPU) is emulated.

On all other models there is no GS or EE. Sony has been working on an emulator for these models but it is not ready for prime. When it is ready, they will enable the PSN downloads. Everyone assumes that when this happens, they won't switch back on disc support, but we don't know that for sure, now do we?

As I said I just believe if they really were doing this for PSN profit, we wouldn't have PS1 reading in new PS3s either. It would make no sense to rip one and not the other.

As for GD-ROM support, it seems there is no special laser wavelengths going on, and that a firmware update could definitely tell the BD-ROM in the PS3 how to read these discs.

I can agree about FINALLY bringing PS2 Support to the PS3 (IT'S ABOUT BLOODY TIME!)
However I'm not so sure about bringing Dreamcast support to the PS3.

I have some reasons and ideas to make this work:

1. The games would HAVE to be downloadable, on CD (A.K.A. and similar to the DC Kalisto and Echleon scene releases) or on a DVD (the biggest DC game is 2 disc with a full total capacity of 3.4 GB, and it gives it room for graphics enhancement), as the PS3 can't handle the Dreamcast's proprietary GD-ROM discs.

2. There is no hardware support for the Dreamcast VMU. Since this is Sega we're talking about that wants this implemented, maybe Sony could "borrow" the rights of the VMU Design, and just fit a mini USB connector on instead of the Dreamcast data connector. This would allow it to behave EXACTLY like the original did.

3. All the flaws in the Dreamcast (Mil-CD) should be present for the sake of backwards compatibility and authenticity.

4. The PS3 should be able to emulate the Dreamcast at least 10x over. Enhancements of graphics could be added easily.

5. Big name titles should be present to promote (i.e. Sonic, Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue I and II.) Since Phantasy Star Online (V1 and 2 on DC) is dead except for Private Servers, why not bring it out AGAIN but with free servers? It would probably get popular like they did when they released it as a pay-for MMORPG, maybe even more if it was for free.

6. "Leaked" titles (mainly Propeller Arena and Half-Life) could be available for purchase if rights were obtained, and since both games were ready for publication, they should be ready to go..

7. Make it easy for people with a DC developer unit, or with a PS3 with a new development program, to make their own games. There is such a big homebrew for the Dreamcast. People could make a killing!

I for one look forward to both the dreamcast and the ps2 being able to be played on the ps3, the reason being is I missed out on a lot of great gaming on the ps2 once my neo 4.1 system died on me I jumped ship to microsofts xbox and never looked back so therefore I did not play a lot of the titles.

Never seen the likes of say the God of War Series, never even seen Socom, and so forth, the dreamcast I dont understand how that is going to work out because I know a few titles on there used the memory card along with the game to play it, having the lcd screen on the memory card to say choose the plays in the football game and so forth.
