Rumor: Sony to Remove OtherOS in Next PS3 Firmware Update

According to Owen Stampflee, a Linux Product Manager at Fixstars Corporation, Sony will remove OtherOS in the next PS3 Firmware update due to the recent GeoHot PS3 Hack.

Although this comes as no surprise to PlayStation 3 Slim owners, where OtherOS is already removed, it would contradict Sony's previous statement to standard PS3 owners.

To quote: "Everyone,

I've caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature...

I'm not sure if it's true or not but it's in the best interest of the YDL community to spread the word.

Did you get that from Reddit?

I also agree with all of your statements. The userbase for these games are of course, teenagers that do not appreciate the value of money or hard work. I can't wait to see when they get an average salary at their 'boring-and-stupid' job where they will complain that they are not being payed enough and then spend their money on insignificant objects.

I'm all for homebrew, but it sounds like all of you are trying to live out of your means if you can't afford a measly game.

This probably isn't a big issue. I am sure that the only people who need the hack right now is the devs and once they do what they need to do with it they can make a way everyone else to mod it with software only.

Later CFW for ps3 will be able tp be copied to DVD and then installed. This is a dumb move by Sony if it is true.

You know, Linux isn't even needed to create homebrew. The hackers only need linux to get their memorydumps, and those are already on the net.
