Update: Sony's
Geoff Levand has now
confirmed, to quote: "SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the 'Install Other OS' feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases."
According to
Owen Stampflee, a Linux Product Manager at Fixstars Corporation, Sony will remove OtherOS in the next PS3 Firmware update due to the recent
GeoHot PS3 Hack.
Although this comes as
no surprise to PlayStation 3 Slim owners, where OtherOS is already removed, it would contradict Sony's
previous statement to standard PS3 owners.
To quote: "Everyone,
I've caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature...
I'm not sure if it's true or not but it's in the best interest of the YDL community to spread the word.
Cheers,
Owen"
And they'll likely tell you that you can continue to use OtherOS/Linux on your PS3, as long as you don't update the firmware.
If you really only use your PS3 for OtherOS work, this wouldn't affect you at all.
Poopsqueege, actually, the more dumps that the devs obtain and the more people that attempt to pull something (anything) from these dumps, the better
Link2009, I must disagree with your statement here buddy. Maybe it's because I'm a teenager myself, but everyone has a different story. Stereo-typing does not lead to any solutions. If you look at some polls of where the average family stands (in the U.S at least) you can certainly see why money is a major issue.
There's always two sides to a story (or more) and I do agree that some groups of teens do bitch and spend their money on useless garbage, and undervalue just about everything. But every teen is not like this, and I am sure you did not mean to stereotype in that way
Kakarotoks, I see what you are saying about the rant section... I figured I would get those kind of responses, and quite frankly agree with you as to how it would come out. The only real solution I could see would be one with consequences that would result from a flame-war (I stated in the original post that it would have to be respectable arguments) but I doubt that it would work well at all, and would not to want to add more work on the mods of this forum as it is. Was wishful thinking though
yeah, because it's true indeed! It pisses me off incredibly that you are forced to watch ads (or trailers, same) from something you bought... the ads should be there for something free, like on tv for example.. the ads in the movie theater are ok, because they entertain you until the movie starts... but when you actually BUY something, you paid for it already, why put ads in there? it's not like the ads are used to pay the price of the dvd.. because you're the one who already paid for it.
If they put trailers, ok, but ONLY if you can skip it at any given time... Sometimes a friend comes, and I want to show him a specific scene from a movie at position 56:13 minutes (for example), I put the dvd in, I do play, and oups, I can't skip the damn trailers, have to wait 10 minutes, before I can show that 5 seconds scene to my friend who was in a hurry to leave... WTF?!
That whole FBI and copyright screens are acceptable though, but as long as we can get to the main menu in less than 10 seconds...
Why should I be forced to watch trailers to a movie that I already bought? isn't that ironic? Why should I be forced to watch a "coming soon : wow awesome movie" to a movie that was released 10 years ago (for old dvds), that I watched and hated because it wasn't as awesome as they said it would be?
That's it for today's rant
And.. yet another reason piracy exists!
Thanks for sharing! It's so funny!
I've already shared with my friends LOL
And.. yet another reason piracy exists!
that pic is hilarious! the sad thing is that it's funny because it's true.
and like someone else said, i only download the movies i wouldn't purchase anyway. when it comes to games, i don't even have time to play all the games that i bought legally. i have no need to waste time that i don't have to download games and burn them to discs that i have to buy with money that i don't have.
i'm personally interested in hacking the ps3 for homebrew as i like to create. i don't condone game pirating, but at the same time i just turn a blind eye to it because i don't care if people do pirate games. i believe that everybody has the right to do what they want, whether it's legal/malicious or not is for the courts to decide, not me.
