Rumor: PS2 Software Emulator Coming to Sony's PlayStation 3

Apparently, as the PS2 has about one year left on its life cycle, we shouldn't expect Sony to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility.. and they will just go out and get a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles.

To quote: The rumor comes from NeoGAF member Meph who recounts what was told to him by a Sony representative (openly described as a 'tool'). The story goes that Sony might be willing to buy a PlayStation 2 emulator for the future.

"He mentioned that since the PS2 has just 1 year left on its life-cycle not to expect them to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility," says Meph.

"He then leans in and lowers his voice, as if to tell me some deep dark secret and mentions that Sony may be willing to potentially buy a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles."

They are completely miss informed, maybe they are thinking of the original 80gb that could, but there is no update to make the new 80gb or 40gb ones play ps2 titles.

Having gone and bought a 60G model when they first landed, I am happy to have a good success rate with compatibility, some games won't work, but most (singstar for the wife) do very well.

Year later, and I got a 160G model, cut down hardware and cheaper than my original 60g. While I now have to note what I can and can't run on this machine, the 60G is our main unit for media streaming and main gameplay ( waiting for PlayTV in NZ).

I will be more than glad if they release a firmware update that includes backwards compatibility for non-hardware compatible units.

Having the advantage of playing my PS2 titles on any machine is great and I look forward to that day.
Obliviusly it would be a great move by Sony.

Unfortunately, it's only a rumor: let's hope it will become an official news...

Three version. **Listed here in order of release**
1) Both Emotion Engine and modified GPU included
2) Emotion Engine emulated in real time by Cell, GPU included
3) NO internal PS2 hardware

So no, it is not as easy as releasing it. Remember, Sony wants PS3 to be profitable above all else.

Your statement made me reread the wikis and yes it seems you are right.

Like the South Korean and European models, the North American 80 GB model also excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip.[59] However, it still keeps the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU.
So yes, its doesnt have the emotion engine the old 80gb models but carry the original GPU. So I guess they need to look for a way to emulate that gpu fully in order to make it work or rewrite a complete emulator to run ps2 games.

However current ps2 emulators most likely are written for intel processors and the ps3 is a cell processor so porting it will be really hard plus getting the games to run correctly would require an awful lot of work.
