Update:
VG247.com has confirmed that
Kaz Hirai stated the current PSN service will remain free, and subscriptions are only for "premium content and services."
Sony has revealed during their Media/Investor Conference that the PlayStation Network will be getting a new paid subscription service in 2010 alongside non-game content likely to include applications and videos.
According to their
Slide Presentation [PDF] a "new revenue stream from subscription" will be generated.
Although few other details exist at this time, the way it is worded sounds like it could possibly be a subscription similar to XBox live on its way to PSN.
To quote: "It is unclear what the new revenue stream subscription might be. Could it be similar to Qore, an optional service, or something more akin to Xbox Live Gold, which is a premium service required to play games online for the Xbox 360?"
plus a few peeps with banned xboxs have bought one to play online, they figure that since they have to buy a new console why not buy a ps3 since it allows you to play bluray and has free online stuff.
I too would gladly pay for an unlimited game downloading or renting games from the psn store while your suscription is active.
Why would I want to pay for a subscription?
All I want to do (with my PS3) is play video games and watch blu-ray movies.
Sony's "performance" in the customer-service department is piss-poor. Why would I help prop up this flimsy company by subscribing for a fee?
Premium content has never been interesting to me.
I already pay too much for video games.
Tell you what Sony, when it comes to my PS3, or my other interests, the PS3 has the lowest priority. I can do without premium content, and at a certain point, I can do without you or the PS3. It would suck, but you suck more.
I love my PS3 - I hate Sony.
