PS4 Rumored to Arrive in November, Able to Control it With a Phone

74w ago - Following up on the PlayStation Cloud news, today Kotaku reports that according to their sources the PS4 / Orbis console will be out this November, and purportedly users will be able to control it with a phone.

Below are the rumor details, to quote: "A reliable Kotaku source has informed us that the PlayStation 4, codenamed Orbis, will be out this November in the United States.

Our source - the same reliable source who back in early 2012 told us the codename for Sony's next console and the codename for Microsoft's next console - tells us that there are two models planned for the new machine, and that pricing won't be announced until later this year, possibly around E3. The current plan, our source says, is to release them at $429 and $529, but that could change.

Although nothing is confirmed just yet, as we get closer and closer to the release of Orbis, which Sony is expected to officially announce during an event in New York City tomorrow night, we continue to hear more details about what will ship with the new hardware. Back in January, we learned about the PS4's new controller, which has a small touchpad in the center, and the fancy new user account system that will allow multiple people to log into one console at the same time.

New information revealed by our source suggests that on top of all that, you'll also be able to control the PS4 remotely from your tablet or smartphone. You'll be able to use a mobile device to chat with your PS4 friends or buy games which are then automatically downloaded to your machine, our source says.

Orbis is also following the path first set by Xbox Live: our source says "most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use. Sony's new online service will be called PlayStation World, our source says, replacing PlayStation Plus. (No word on whether that's related to PlayStation Cloud, domains for which Sony registered on Friday. We couldn't find any domains or trademarks registered for PlayStation World.)

Some other tidbits: our source says that every PS4 will come with a PlayStation Eye; that a new spectating feature will let you watch other friends play games from your console's dashboard, even when you don't own the game they're playing; and that the console will support local network play via Vita.

Also via our source, some new photos of a PS4 prototype controller, which match up with other photos that we've seen and verified. One is above. The other:

Current photos of the PS4 controller are inconsistent with some of the information we've received. For example, we've seen Orbis documentation that details a "share" button, and Edge magazine corroborated that not long after we reported it, saying that the controller's share button will record gameplay and allow you to share it online.

This controller doesn't seem to have a share button at all, although it's possible that the functionality has been wrapped into the all-purpose PlayStation button, which is a carryover from the PS3's DualShock controller.

Pictures of the prototype controller also match up with what we've reported about the touch pad and LED light, which you can see on the controller's back in the photos we've received.

We've reached out to Sony for comment and will update should they get back to us. Sony is expected to announce their new console tomorrow night at an event in New York City."

Finally, in related PlayStation 4 news Dutch site [Register or Login to view links] reports that UEFA Champions League now contains in-game advertisements promoting Sony's planned event which takes place tomorrow at 6PM EST.

"...The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action..."

- hmmm, yeah sure that is just for the gamers benefit, they won't spy on your usage at all
- Wouldn't be surprised if they enforced some kind of facial recognition and then recorded you playing on the thing too

but then again, sony wouldn't be that sneaky and evil would they... WOULD they?!!

Yesterday Sony teased with a PS4 / Orbis promotional video on their next-generation console, and today Edge-Online.com (linked above) has revealed some additional PlayStation 4 details as well.

Below is the scoop including purported PS4 launch dates, to quote: "Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next XBox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4's European launch will follow in early 2014.

Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed 'see the future'. Sony Computer Entertainment released a teaser video last night to announce the event. Below, our sources revealed what to expect from PlayStation 4.

The controller

Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita's rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

The launch

We're told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution. Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch, but it's not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware."

Update: [Register or Login to view links] has now seemingly confirmed that the PS4 controller will include a front touch-pad, speaking a week before the console's expected reveal in New York.

To quote: "A VG247 source said today that PS4′s rumoured controller touch-pad is real. The input is on the front of the handset. The Start and Select buttons have been moved as a result.

The controller is "more or less" the same shape as the current DualShock. We've been told today that the L2 and R2 buttons have been remodelled for the better.

Sony is expected to announce PlayStation 4 at a New York event next Wednesday."

Hopefully Sony will change their direction a little bit and support homebrew developers.
