PS3 Firmware Update v3.55 Arrives, Adds Security Patch

207w ago - Update: [Register or Login to view links] has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update version 3.55 blocked access to lv2 kernel "execute" access, however, if you can patch back in a method to lv1_write_htab_entry, you can re-enable this area.

Today Sony Network Operations Americas VP Eric Lempel has announced that PS3 Firmware update v3.55 has arrived and simply adds a security patch.

More details are posted below, and to quote: "A new PS3 system software update, v3.55, will be released soon. This is a minor update that adds a security patch."

As expected, the PS3 Firmware 3.55 update works with the E3 Card Reader so you are still able to put the PS3 in Factory/Service Mode, however, Sony has revoked lv2diag.self file_1 patching the ability to downgrade (via PSDowngrade or PSGrade) or JailBreak PlayStation 3 consoles on Firmware above version 3.50.

Currently it is possible for PS Downgrade / JailBreak users to exit the PS3 Factory/Service Mode and get back to a normal Retail PS3 console using the lv2diag.self file_2.

Finally, although not recommended for PS3 homebrew fans, PS3 Firmware 3.55 is a mandatory update for those seeking to use PSN.

While some have reported the various bypass methods are temporarily working, more promising solutions include PS3 hackers continuing work on decrypting PS3 Firmware 3.50 with version 3.55 next in their sights.

a jailbroken ps3 is only "flaggable" while it is in jailbreak mode and signed in to the ps network. as soon as you turn the jailbroken ps3 off, then turn it back on normally (not jailbroken) sony has no way to tell that it was in jailbreak mode 5 minutes ago.

if you don't sign in to the ps network with a jailbroken ps3 you will more than likely not have any issues at all.

against piracy why? I am a pirate and I know a lot of pirates, unfortunately these pirates still buy games and give sony money.

Including me =(

I believe they do realise, I even think they dont care about homebrew and people reading txt files on their PS3, the number one reason they keep doing this is piracy. I know most people here are against it, but still we all know the end result is that vast majority jailbreak to play pirated games.

I have 2 ps3's on updated to 3.55 and other on 3.50. I wish homebrew was possible without piracy

Lets hope by blocking one attack, Sony have left themselves open for a barrage of attacks, 3.55 downgrade, custom firmware, full jailbreaking of the latest firmware. But in all honesty this is only the beginning, the game of cat and mouse will continue for a long time, and I may consider updating one of my PS3s to the latest firmware to allow full access to the PSN, Sony has got to realise not everyone is hacking the console to play illegal copies, their games seem better on the PS3 compared to the Xbox360. Smoother gameplay, and clearer picture.

The only reason I have a jailbroken PS3 is for the third party software, yet due to system issues on some games (ACB, COD:BO) the jailbroken PS3 had to copy the games to the internal HDD, and then patch them to run.

Emulators are what I'm after, they take me back to my youth, and although the games' graphics are crude the gameplay was what counts, so I still enjoy playing them.
