PS3 Firmware 3.41 Issues Arise for PlayStation 3 HDD Upgraders

217w ago - Today Examiner.com (linked above) reports that numerous users who opted to upgrade the PS3 HDD are now experiencing issues with the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.41 update.

It is not yet determined if these issues are related to the PS3 Firmware Patches Sony instituted beginning with PlayStation 3 Firmware update version 3.41, however, there is currently a [Register or Login to view links] on Sony's official board covering the issues.

To summarize, quoting from [Register or Login to view links]: "The problems being reported are the following: PS3 owners are unable to update their system to firmware 3.41, HDD upgrades aren't being allowed, systems are crashing, and after installing a new HDD the system isn't fully downloading the file and then prompts users with a message stating 'no applicable data found'."

Sony did respond to online inquiries regarding this topic with this response:

"We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing with upgrading Internal Hard Disc Drive (for PlayStation 3) on your PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system. The information available to our Consumer Services Department does not suggest that this is a problem PlayStation(R) owners are likely to experience when upgrading the HDD with 3.41 update. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) strongly supports the quality of its products and backs them with full confidence."

Sony is currently recommending affected users update their previous PS3 HDD first to see if the update works with it, followed by updating from a thumb drive formatted in FAT 32 with the 3.41 PS3 update.

WOW! I just upgraded last Friday to a 320GB HDD... Good thing my drive got here so quickly that I was able to install it before the update...

Here are the details. NOT ALL FAT PS3 systems are affected, but ALL PS3 SLIMS are.

If you change out the HDD on a SLIM and you upgraded your firmware to 3.41 prior to changing out your HDD, your ps3 is pretty much just a paper weight until until the next update comes out.

If your system was not updated to 3.41 prior to changing out your HDD, but after, don't change out your HDD again else your screwed.

Sony is working the issue and will be releasing another update soon that will correct this problem. If you are running 3.41 on your system right now, Sony recommends not changing your HDD until the new update is released.

I was going to say that Sony's combination of useless updates every few days combined with applying those updates automatically would be a disaster someday. I didn't expect it to be so soon though. Maybe people will think twice now before paying for, and turning on auto update.

The reality is Sony doesn't care. What is the worst that happens? Lose a few million from a lawsuit in a few years? As long as you keep letting $ony take a dump on you, they will keep doing it.

And maybe it is intentional. After all, it wouldn't be the first time Sony advertised and bragged about core functionality and then yanked it away without reason or warning.

I've got a fat 80gb (upgraded to 500gb) MGS4 model. No problems (so far) upgrading.
