193w ago - Today Sony's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media Patrick Seybold has confirmed that PS3 Firmware update 3.21 is coming on April 1, 2010 and will disable the OtherOS feature!
To quote: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009.
This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the "Other OS" feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
• Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
• Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
• Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
• Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the "Other OS" feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the "Other OS," as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

My honest opinion is the only bad thing about this is if it is going to ruin hacking abilities than it sucks however, if you dont want to upgrade to 3.21 than buy another PS3 for online and gaming and use the Linux one for all your other stuff.
At least you know the PS3 wont break which is a good thing. Look at how many people have bought 3 -5 Xbox 360's because they break all the time even when Microsoft says they fixed it (yeah right).
I am not saying people don't have a right to be pissed but you know eventually it will get hacked and whoever figures it out will make sure you can hack it without needing linux (we can only hope).
I guess if i get to a point that i have to upgrade to 3.21 i will just buy another PS3. I have loved every PlayStation console regardless if it was or was not hacked and I love my PS3. If you dont want to waste a lot of money on PS3 games than just buy an XBOX360 or rent games online it is cheap and fast.
And another thing, If you spent as much as i did on a PS3 $599 and wanted a great web browser and/or linux? than why didnt you just buy a PC, they are so cheap now.
I am mad at Sony for doing this but I still love the system especially playing hd movies from an external hard drive, i love the joystick (way better than the xbox360) and what is the Wii, (i dont have any kids) I would rather go bowl for real. .
The PS3 is the best console regardless if they remove linux.
I kept my ps2 becuase i had a ton of games on the hard drive and if i wanted to play them i would just load up the console. I wouldn't be able to play these on the ps3 yet.
But as consumers, many of us paid extra money for the additional features, like OtherOS or Backwards Compatibility. I got rid of my PS2 as fast as possible, because I got a PS3. Furthermore, If i knew this would eventually happen, I would have saved my own money for more productive purposes.
You know that now, a fat 40 gig 3rd gen PS3 ranks equally to a new slim ps3?
