157w ago - Today SystemLink (linked above) has shared a scan from the latest Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM issue #45) which confirms the upcoming
PS3 3D Firmware update will indeed arrive this June (likely around June 10, 2010) as previously
reported.
However, as
expected, this PlayStation 3 Firmware update will only bring Sony fans 3D games for the PS3, not 3D Blu-ray just yet.
To quote: "In Issue 45, on sale now, OPM reveal that a new Firmware, possibly 3.40, is coming to PS3 in June, during or shortly after E3.
The only other information given is that this update will prepare your PS3 for 3D games, and another firmware update later in the year will add the same functionality to Blu-rays."
If I recall, it was added in the Debug Firmware, however not in the retail.
That would be the standard, but games often aren't because the games can't reach 60fps due to both weak hardware and extremely lazy game designers.
Usually this would be done with vsync which means the frame rate can only go as high as the refresh rate, which is normally 60... but games these days don't seem to do that, they just have a programmed limit of 30fps and leave vsync off (to save a drop of resources). Fighting games are the ones where they absolutely have to try to keep it at 60fps and they manage to fail at that too.
It's likely going to require a 120Hz monitor or TV... unless they plan on it being crappy. Their goal is currently 30fps so it wouldn't surprise me if they have the 3D working with 60fps giving the effect of 30 once again.
