iD Software: PS4 Will Be the First Next-Gen Console to Market

271w ago - iD Software's technical director John Carmack predicts that the PS4 will be the first next-gen console out on the market.

He also expects for at least one of the upcoming consoles to ship without support for optical media.

To quote: John Carmack, technical director at iD Software, has predicted that Sony will be the first platform holder to make a move into the next generation of gaming hardware - though he doesn't expect any new machines to be announced in the near future.

"The whole jockeying for who's going to release the first next-gen console is very interesting and pretty divorced from the technical side of things," Carmack told CD-Action, as spotted by Eurogamer's Digital Foundry.

"Whether Sony wants to jump the gun to prevent the same sort of 360 lag from happening to them again seems likely.

"As developers, we would really like to see this generation stretch as long as possible. We'd like to see it be quite a few more years before the next-gen consoles comes out, but I suspect one will end up shipping something earlier rather than later."

I would personally buy a PS4 for the PS4 games. I would use a PS2 to play PS2/PS1 games. Hell my computer can run PS1/PS2 isos.

I personally would not mind a digital download console. I have so many damn games boxes after 4 generations of gaming that it is stupid. Maybe with an option to save to an external hdd?

I have 1 thing to say. No ID software, you're wrong. I have a feeling that Microsoft will announce their next console at E3 next year. and by announce I mean actually show a prototype.

The PS3 has a 8 core processor, and each one is 3.2 GHz. That is more powerful then most (Not all) Pc's around today. In fact most gaming computers have 4 cores with 2.4 GHz per core. Meaning that the PS3's processor is already good enough for years to come. Not that processing is everything. But it's good enough to survive way longer then the 360.
