LG Wins Injunction Against Sony, PS3 European Shipments Seized

199w ago - As a follow-up to our previous article, today the civil court of justice in the Hague has granted LG a preliminary injunction that will see all new PlayStation 3 consoles imported into Europe confiscated by customs for at least ten days leaving only a few weeks worth of PS3 stock left in the channel.

To quote from MCVUK: "Shipments of PS3 consoles have been seized by European customs officers as an LG injunction against Blu-ray technology seeks to block Sony products from sale, according to a report in The Guardian this afternoon.

Earlier this month, LG had filed a claim with the International Trade Commission calling for a block on PS3 sales, saying the device infringes on its copyrights.

The technology firm claims its rival's Blu-ray disc devices use four patented technologies while, Bravia TVs infringe another four.

At the time, the firm said it wanted to have sales of the PS3 (which plays Blu-rays) and other products banned.

And now, surprisingly, its got its way. The Guardian reports that an initial injunction has now been granted by the civil court of justice in the Hague, leading to all new imports of PS3s to be confiscated."

All I can say is hahahaha owned

From what i understand, the major part of the lg/sony issue is over software.. not over whom is allowed to make what parts/devices/products that adhere to the blu-ray standard. sony got a hold of lg software used for reading blu-ray discs, repackaged it under their name and implemented it in the ps3 and other sony blu-ray players. instead of writing their own software, they just stole lg's.

Isn't bluray a sony format? and LG makes players for that format? can't sony just yank LG's right/license to make bluray players?

Panasonic, Philips and Sony own majority of the rights to the format - can't they just tell LG to F-Off and not allow them to make more players?

I'm sure this won't be the end.

Well i was a sony user until the NEW TOS came out. so what does this mean for people online does it effect there TOS aswell since it is LGs technology now and not sonys if they win ? does this mean every consumer can sue sony for selling illegal products ?

Does this mean we have been sold bootlegged ps3 or pirated ps3 from sony and not only sony but from the movie companies aswell to me all the companies that sold you anything with blueray technology on it is now pirated software or technology.

I don't know if anyone ever watched the movie about the Man who created the Windsheild wiper ? Ford stole his invention they sold it to every car company then they got sued for it and so did every other company that bought it. will that happen here if so LG gonna be some rich ppl. Look out Walmart, blockbuster, and all other companies that use the Blueray cause you will be owing LG some money.

There is no reason Sony can't make new BD drives that don't infringe on LG's copyrights. And if they can't do that then they will either have to pay LG 'royalties' for every one they sell, or they will buy them from LG from now on. Blu ray is Sony's heart and soul, they will do anything to keep it going, and we as consumers probably won't notice anything different from whatever happens here.

Likely they will lose billions because of this, but sometimes corporations like Sony need a swift kick in the butt and a cold hard realization of reality. They have allowed themselves to get too big, and most likely corrupt, and lost sight of whats really important (the consumers). This might be a good opportunity for them to clean house and start fresh.

This is indeed a good thing.
