Grateful Dead Revived for Rock Band

Also, tracks from Garbage, Hole, Pixies, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

By Andrew Hayward, 09/05/2007
Harmonix and MTV Games announced today that they are partnering with Rhino Entertainment to bring 18 psychedelic tracks from legendary rockers the Grateful Dead to Rock Band in the form of downloadable content. No word yet on how the tracks will be distributed, whether in the form of albums or smaller packages, but confirmed songs include "Casey Jones," "Sugar Magnolia," "Touch of Grey," "Truckin'," and "Uncle John's Band."

"Grateful Dead's unique fusion of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, and jazz challenged traditional musical boundaries and pushed the limits of creativity to produce a signature sound that is undeniably their own," said Paul DeGooyer, senior VP of audio, home video and electronic games at MTV. "With an enormous legion of fans all over the world, Rock Band will give players a chance to interact with the music of these beloved rock pioneers and experience what Grateful Dead did best -- jam from the depths of their souls."

The 18 Grateful Dead tracks join previously confirmed complete albums Nevermind by Nirvana and Who's Next by The Who among of the ranks of downloadable content for Rock Band, along with unrevealed tracks from Metallica.

Also new on the Rock Band front are four new disc-based tracks, confirmed during a playtest of the head-to-head drum battles by IGN. The new tracks are:

  • Garbage - I Think I'm Paranoid
  • Hole - Celebrity Skin
  • Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

Rock Band is expected in stores this November for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We've been chatting up Harmonix in recent months about its upcoming rhythm epic, so check out our Rock Band previews for more about the developer's ambitions and the creation of the drum controller and interface.

Watchman Yay, Pixies!

I'm assuming that it'll be the original version of "Wave", and not the UK surf. As much as I like that version, it would be a little out of place in the game! I agree, Debaser would have rocked. Although, "The Holiday Song" would have been my personal choice.

Those other announced songs suck. The "Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs?" People who can't think of a better band name shouldn't be allowed to play music. Mind you, what they play, most high school beginner players write that shit in an hour.

The inclusion of the Dead and The Pixies is music to my ears... now just add some more classic prog rock and some ZAPPA, and we'll be set! (Dweezilkid, holler!)

Just help confirm that the song selections are great and will make for countless hours on each instrument. Garbage, Hole, and THE PIXIES!

But with so much DLC, let's just hope they don't screw up the pricing.
