Yes, you can do it from thumb drive (as I did) or from cdr. I don't reccomend cd though because then you can't save your orig.bin

If you have a Samsung drive, you can use extreme bootmaker and have it create the files you need on your c drive.
It will make a folder named XBF.
Then you can use a NTFS4DOS boot cd to flash your drive.
If you have a Hitachi drive, you don't need the floppy drive, just dl the firmware then you'll open up a command line and flash the drive.
So yes, there are ways around using the floppy drive.

The easiest and safest way is to use the aformentioned extreme boot maker. Its really quite easy.... assuming you can get the damn 360 case apart. Here are the instructions from it's readme (my additions in red)
How to Use:
-----------
0. Download extreme firmware from this site.
1. Load your floppy disk or connect your USB Flash Drive.
2. Run Xtreme Boot Maker.
3. Detect your sata chipset, if required. Have it autodetect
4. Select destination for files. Your thumbdrive. Note it will erase everthing on the drive you select so be careful!
5. Open your Xtreme Firmware's .bin file.
6. Click "Prepare Drive".
7. Boot from your prepared drive or your NTFS cd.
8. Type "samread xxxxxxx xxxxx" to backup your 360's original firmware. The X's refer to the serial number on the back of your 360 case.
9. Type "samhack xxxxxxx xxxxx" to flash the Xtreme firmware.
(Don't include the quotes, and replace x with your 360's firmware.)

Thought it was kinda common sense but, run the bootmaker without the 360 DVD drive connected. It will format a thumbdrive to be bootable and to flash the drive. Then, disconnect all your drives, connect the 360's drive and set the bios to boot from the usb drive.
