New xbox, what modchip should i choose?
Hi guys. I'm about to buy a new xbox... im totally newb when it comes to xbox scene btw. i'd be interested in a solderless modship if possible, if of course there's any decent one. i'd like to play backups from dvds or HD and run homebrew etc and all the standard stuff a xbox modship usually allows.
ive especially seen the Xbox SpiderChip V1.1 & the XENIUM ICE SOLDERLESS, anyone knows if they're any good? btw any advices would be welcome what are the versions of xboxes sold in stores please?
thanks in advance btw!

My friend bought a matrix chip (solderless mod) a few years back, and it came loose while he was playing and fried. And then it took his HDD with it. Thus I advise against solderless mods. If you can't solder, you should either get someone who can to solder for you, or you should softmod.
The neat thing about softmodding is that it can be done for free without buying anything additional for your xbox, or if you buy (or borrow/rent) 007, splinter cell, or mechassault and a memory card, and know someone with a modded xbox it can be done without even opening your xbox. I softmodded 3 xboxes yesterday, my average time was around 5 minutes each.
As for xboxes sold in a store, a rule of thumb is to check the date on the bottom and try to find the oldest one. Its not as important for softmodding, but it gets harder to solder (or go solderless) with a higher version xbox, so in this case older is better..

okay, well thanks for the answer guys!
After reading infos about solderless chips (with notes such as "there's nothing good to say about solderless chips if i recall correctly - the main concern about em being as you said that they will eventually come loose and you have to open the xbox once a month then :/) . i also read about solfmodding which seems real nice.... but well, i'd have to buy the action replay and a game to do it (or as you said have a friend borrow it to me wouldve been a solution, and still thats about 40to60€, the price of a good chip) but then again, i heard that if something happens during the flashing process with softmodding, its real hard to get your xbox working again. (on smartxx for example there are 3 banks for bioses on their "basic" chip which is only 30€ and you can switch between the bioses you want, that seems excellent)
So after visiting ALOT of sites and everything, i ordered 1 - an XBOX lol (99€, damn cheap for such a good game system if you ask me!) and 2 - a smartXX LT OPX @ 30€ , with an easy solder solution ( only 8 solder points and the chip is to put directly on the back of the mainboard for 1.6 XBOX). i just hope it ain't too hard to solder, my mother has soldering skills (but with stainglass, lol) so we'll see. Anyway, this chip seems to have awesome functions for its price! i hope it aint too hard to connect the xbox to the PC in order to flash the bios tho... my router's got a bad caracter :/ (didnt manage to connect the PSP after countness hours working on it) ah and btw, are all new xboxes sold now in stores 1.6?
thanks for the help!

well no need to rebuild the LPC with wires anyway that's a good thing, 8 solder points only :-) if anyone has anymore infos of the flashing process from the dvd drive, the thing i don't understand is how the box recognizes the disc with the bios if i haven't flashed it with a new one to do so.. anyway thanks for the helpful help guyz!

Ok i see thanks again. i was mostly worried about the connection to my PC/internet via my router cause of the PSP... and i recieved the xbox today so i went testing asap. plugged in the cable on my 2nd ethernet port and guess what.... sbow live worked instantly! whereas i never got my psp to work... does that mean that ill most likely have no trouble ftping from/to the XBOX once my modship is properly setup? i hope so! the chip is coming tomorow.. cant wait really lets hope everything's gonna go fine

well, soldered the modchip everything went ok, took a bit of time to see how it worked but i installed unleashX & even managed to copy a disc to HDD & play it, very nice. Ok i said cool, but with 10 gigs its kinda limited too ) i had bought a 160gigs maxtor... went to smartxx website to see how to set it up... (the Smartxx OS already has a function to clone a drive) and even since, my box hasnt done anything else than Flashing red and green :-( actually it didnt even boot with the new HDD... so i tried putting the older one back... and it doesnt work no more at all.. 2 reboots + FRAG, im desperate :-(

yep it's a 1.6, the screen doesnt even start... i dismounted totally the box yesterday. checked the solder points, remade em even better than before. closed the box, and it loaded!! then i decided to close the box, put the screws etc, it works, and while i played, about 2 hours later, again the xbox crashes and 3 reboot + FRAG... (i should add that i moved the xbox with EXTREME care) i tried moving the box, nothing. I put it on the side.. it boots , and works... then after a good while (again i didnt move anything) it crashes, i move the xbox again, and get it to work again... this just puzzles me so much lol. atm it still works but who knows what tomorrow might bring lol if you have any idea they're welcome. i dunno if it might come from the soldering points... thnaks for the help btw, much appreciated

Maybe you should use the chip to install a soft mod and then just remove it? Then you wouldn't need to worry about it coming loose. Remember to lock your hard drives though.

hm that'd be an idea... but the chip's features are so cool (2meg bank bioses, ftp server etc, quite useful) that im hesitating. anyway, i soldered the chip directly to the mainboard, maybe with a wire install i'd have less trouble? just gotta see where i could put the chip so it doesnt get crushed when i put it back together ) anyway it happened 3 times again today, i moved the box each time to another position and managed to get it working so.... hehe, wierd situation
