DL DVD+R for backups?

Can anyone tell me if I can use DL DVD+Rs to back up all my games which are greater than 4.7 GB? If I can, what brand do you suggest using, and can I use -Rs instead? Thank you in advanced.

I've been using DVD+R DL for my PS2 games and all seems to be good, so looking at those results I would assume that you could do the same.

Xbox drives have a HORRIBLE time reading game data (not movie data) from DVD+R DLs. Do not waste your expensive media on it (I've personally tested with Jade Empire and Ninja Gaiden Black on the best xbox drive out, the Samsung, and it sucked donkey balls...).

from what iv read verebatim dvd+dl are the only dl disks you can get a decent game working with

Have you tried any other xbox drives? My samsung won't even read my normal +R media, while my Thomson reads them just fine, so chances are some drives may read better then the "best" drive. Anyways, I can't add to much else to the discusion as ive never burned a DL disk, exept that you should just rip your games to single layer. You save a boatload of money on disks, its easier to read and to make more copies later. On xbox ripping is really simple, just extract the iso, and replace all the live files with smaller .xbe files, delete extra language files and in very rare cases replace the credits or ending FMV with a smaller one (save the old FMV on your computer if you want to play it later). Then rebuild the iso and burn.

I pertty much use DVD+R exclusively now for single layer (and DL, since DVD-R DL sucks) with the whole "DVD-ROM Booktype" thing. When it comes to optical media, I am pretty much a master with it. I used Verbatim DVD+R DLs with my tests for my xbox dual layer games and they loaded so slowly that pieces of poloygons would fall out everywhere (streaming games can't keep up).

But you're right, nearly every dual layer game on the xbox can be easily made into a single layer game (with the exception of Jade Empire if you want to keep the FMV... that takes some time).

While it's a bit off topic, you can use any of the various patching utilities out there to alter the main XBE once you've extracted the files from the ISO then burn the files to two different single-layer DVD+R's and copy the files directly on to a modded Xbox's harddrive. Saves you the trouble of DL's and the money, you don't loose any content, and you don't have to worry over replacing files. Of course all of this assumes you have enough harddrive space on the Xbox for the resultant files, but I'll bet most do.

As said earlier, remember to set book type to DVD-ROM. My Xbox, with a Samsung drive, won't read 3/4ths of the media I burn if it's not book-typed DVD-ROM.

Tiayo Yuden media is great stuff, too -- I've used it for almost all my Xbox backups with no problematic burns, except for a couple that weren't properly booktyped.

If your going to play the game off the hard drive, why not just rip the game directly or ftp the files?
