August 7, 2007 - Controversy arose after the release of
All-Pro Football 2K8 when it was discovered O.J. Simpson could be assigned to a fictional team called The Assassins who feature a knife-wielding mascot. The game packs a roster of retired athletes and allows players to build their dream team and give it a preset name and mascot. O.J., of course, was accused of stabbing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman to death in 1994, but was acquitted in 1995. The former star running back was found legally responsible for their deaths in 1997 and was ordered to pay the Goldman estate $33.5 million. According to
Reuters, the Goldman family has won a court order allowing them to seize any money O.J. earns off of All-Pro Football 2K8.
Simpson has always maintained his innocence and has stated he will not pay any of the $33.5 million award voluntarily.
All-Pro Football 2K8 was published by Take-Two, the same company who brought us the controversial games Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt 2. A statement issued by the publisher says the Assassins mascot is "not specifically associated with O.J. Simpson, and the game does not promote any such connection." Take-Two has not disclosed details on Simpson's compensation, but the court has ordered O.J. to turn over his contract with the publisher.
Simpson's lawyer, Ronald Slates, argued against the order, claiming the fact that his client has lived in Florida for several years puts him out of California's jurisdiction.
