2K Games today announced that http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3161997, an original IP developed by Gearbox Software (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2019257), will be heading to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC during the 2008 holiday season. First revealed earlier this week http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200708/N07.0814.1539.08013.htm of the September issue of
Game Informer, Borderlands will mix first-person combat with RPG elements, vehicular action, and extreme customization.
"Borderlands creates a universe of gameplay that goes far beyond anything anyone would expect," said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software. "We're tapping into every bit of Gearbox Software's experience with the biggest science fiction video game franchises, then taking everything way past the next level."
According to the press release, Borderlands will feature "hundreds of thousands of weapons" thanks to its "groundbreaking content generation system," which promises staggering variety in everything from missions to enemies and environments.
"Borderlands represents an important evolutionary leap in game design and technology," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games. "By utilizing revolutionary new technology to create thousands of unique, randomly generated missions, weapons and situations, Borderlands will raise the bar for next gen action games."
While actual narrative details are scarce, the aforementioned magazine cover paints the title as an apocalyptic science fiction tale in the vein of 1979 film favorite,
Mad Max. Though Borderlands will feature a full single-player campaign, its main draw may be its four-player online co-op mode in which players can drop in or out at will. Additional details are expected to surface in the September issue of Game Informer.
