Cannot get started - PS3 NEWS

I have read all the tutorials and I think I am missing something, because even though I follow the instructions, most of the iso's I created simply do not start.

My first attempt was a success with Virtual Tennis. The Ripkit provided clear instructions and I got the game to work. I then tried using the ripkits for moose-swbf2, then a-tokobots, a-lohero...But they do not run. The "splash" works, meaning that when I scroll down to the UMD icon the little movie and music comes through, but I always get "The game could not be started" message when I try to run the game.

I have what I believe are the full game iso's. I have used the the ripkits posted on this terrific forum, I get the iso, but it doesn't run.

I am not being lazy. I have read and searched but I cannot find what seems to be a basic misunderstanding or step. I am getting a little frustrated, which is why I am making this post.

Not sure what to suggest offhand (maybe try rebuilding manually versus using a ripkit?), but things to check include:

- Your PSP Firmware revision (make sure it's v1.00 or v1.50) as the loaders won't currently work with anything higher.

- check the PS2 game titles against the STICKY threads in our PSP Chat Forum to make sure they actually work with the specific Loader you're attempting to use them with.

- make sure that all the files are in the correct place on the Mem Stick (based on the Loader ReadMe files) and you're using the correct process to load with UMD Emu/Fastloader or Device Hook Launcher and/or Hook Boot Launcher (older) / Hook Boot Launcher (newer). Good luck!

After the above, another problem might be that not all images generated by UMDGen work yet. Bleach and Bleach 2 don't work with UMDGen from experience. I was able to create working ISOs for both using VCDROMx. Still, I'm looking forward to the next UMDGen release which should offer higher compatibility. UMDGen's much easier to use than VCDROMx.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm a little embarassed at my oversight, but perhaps I can share my experience and some other noob will reap the benefit.

My problem was simply due to having the ISO emulation mode set to system menu and not direct load. Once I did that, most of my iso that I generated following the procedures worked.

A few didn't, however. I will be perusing to see what else I can learn.

I am new to this board and wanted to ask a question. Maybe two.

Just bought a PSP and it ask telling me i have to upgrade to v2.0 before i can play anything. Am i wrong, but i thought i read here that only firmware v1.0 - v1.5 will work?

I am so new to this that i'm trying to absorb everything all at once. I picked up a 1gb mem stick duo pro to be able to move files back and forth. Now if i could just figure out "what" i need and where to put it, it would be a positive step forward.

If someone could kick me onto the right path, it would be appreciated. My PSP is sitting on my desk and i'd really like to use it, but i'd rather be sure that upgrading to v2.0 isn't going to cause me any problems it would be a pain to fix later.

This does NOT belong in UMDGen Chat... you need to read the Tutorials in the STICKY thread in the PSP Chat section and search there for 90+ page threads on getting started in various areas. NOBODY is going to re-type it all for you when it's already in other places on the site, and NO, you don't want to upgrade to 2.0 unless you want to play the newer (original) titles from UMD. If you're seeking to play older iSOs or homebrew then stick with 1.5 like the rest of us have.
