As previously announced, Sony Handheld Consoles Product Planning and Platform Software Innovation Director Don Mesa has posted up a video tour today of the incoming PS Vita System Software Update v1.80 below!

To quote: As most of you know we are releasing a pretty hefty System Software Update (v1.80) for PlayStation Vita (PS Vita), which will enhance your experience and also allow you to play PSone Classics on your device.

Before the update becomes available, I wanted to take the opportunity to walk you through some of the highlighted changes and give you a sneak preview of what you can expect.

    PSOne Classics

We are working hard to ensure that all of your favorite PS one Classics titles will be available for download directly on your PS Vita via PlayStation Store (PS Store) as soon as possible.

Here is a list of PSone Classics titles that will be available for download on 8/28:

    • Arc the Lad
    • Cool Boarders 2
    • FINAL FANTASY VII
    • Hot Shots Golf 2
    • Jet Moto
    • Syphon Filter
    • Tomb Raider
    • Twisted Metal 2
    • Wild Arms

For those of you who have already purchased these titles, you will be able to re-download those games directly from your PS Store account or transfer them to your PS Vita directly from your PS3 at no extra charge.

I hope you enjoyed the video; for any additional information on PS Vita System Software Update v1.80, please visit [Register or Login to view links] when the update goes live.

As always, we appreciate and look forward to your feedback and questions below.

Update: A hidden feature of the PlayStation Vita 1.80 update has been discovered by Andrefpvs, to quote from [Register or Login to view links] on it:

"Not mentioned in today’s PlayStation Blog post about Vita firmware 1.80 is the ability to control PSP games by using the touch screen. As seen in these shots below you can now assign different controller inputs to the corners of the Vita touch screen.

While this is something I would probably never use, it is still great to have the option available. Sony also seems to have added support to map the Right Stick to the L and R buttons. We will be on the look out for more stealth features added via 1.80"

According to [Register or Login to view links] the latest update adds an undocumented PlayStation Mobile feature as well, to quote:

"One of the undocumented features in PS Vita firmware v1.80 is PlayStation Mobile transfers – the feature that allows you to transfer PlayStation Mobile content to and from your PS3 or PC/Mac. The PlayStation Mobile service will be launching this Autumn, so firmware 1.80 adds compatibility for the service.

Until now, the only way to transfer PSM content to your Vita was using the PlayStation Mobile SDK and a PC. The new feature means gamers will be able to transfer / backup content to their PS3, and eventually download content to their PS3 from the PlayStation Mobile store."

Also according to Jucksalbe PS Vita Firmware 1.80 also locks memory cards to a single PSN account, meaning users can no longer store data from multiple accounts on one memory card. Those who try to switch accounts will get the following message:

The memory card inserted in your system is linked with the following Sony Entertainment Network account.
    [account name]
To use the memory card with your PS Vita system you must format the memory card.
If you format the memory card, all data on the memory card will be deleted.

Those who try to switch accounts will be asked to format the memory card, which will erase all data stored. So be sure to backup all your saves if they are on a different account before updating.

PlayStation Vita Firmware 1.80 also blocks VHBL according to wololo (via wololo.net/2012/08/28/ps-vita-firmware-1-80-blocks-vhbl/), to quote:

Well, this is a surprise, and not a good one. Vita firmware 1.80 comes with a few unwelcome updates, one of them being that it blocks VHBL.

I have good and bad news. The good news is that, as far as I could see, VHBL still runs fine on firmware 1.80. The bad news is, it is impossible to copy it to the PS Vita. The version I tested had been installed before the update to 1.80, but sadly I could confirm the 1.80 update prevents us from copying the VHBL files, ad well as homebrews, to the memory card.

Vita firmware 1.80 comes with a forced CMA update (open CMA, sadly, didn’t help to prevent that), which, among other things, has a series of more advanced checks on the files it copies from and to the Vita. Remember how we could put anything we wanted in the PSP savedata folders, and get CMA to copy that to the vita? install.zip, h.bin, etc, etc… well, all of this is over, and now only the allowed files for each specific save seem to be accepted.

Several people are already looking into this, but for now it means that our long awaited VHBL release is, at the very least, postponed, if not worse.

I am not sure this is a good strategy from Sony. As I’ve been saying for a while, VHBL is a blessing in disguise for Sony, because it distracts many skilled hackers, focusing the attention of the scene on something that is basically harmless. The day VHBL is blocked, these people will start to look for other ways to hack the vita. Note however that I am not sure if this is just Sony cleaning up their CMA code by enforcing stricter rules, or if this is intentionally made to prevent VHBL from running.

As you can imagine, I am the first one to be disappointed by this, stay tuned while we are (of course) looking for solutions...

The good news is PS Vita hacker [Register or Login to view links] has Tweeted that he has bypassed this and is running VHBL on Firmware 1.80 followed by a second Tweet showing a "Hello World" running on it stating "VHBL for 1.80 with latest CMA" (Pics: pic.twitter.com/jMHSywWM and pic.twitter.com/M7QUJEV5)

So finally a good update with some useful features. Another thing is the background colors are different.

And for me, the carrier name is now gone. It's just the icons.

too bad i've heard they just reused the psp ps1 emu an it kinda sucks. that's sony for you.

we should have perfect ps1 and ps2 emulation on vita... yeah right tho.

and on top of that it's wonderful how sony loves charging people for these old games that we all own but must rebuy them again to play on ps3/psvita ect.

sometimes i really hate sony... like now.

It does say at the end of the article that if you have already paid for these titles then you can get them again for the Vita for free.
I'm assuming it means if you have bought them for the PSP though, not the original PS1.

For those of you who have already purchased these titles, you will be able to re-download those games directly from your PS Store account or transfer them to your PS Vita directly from your PS3 at no extra charge.

Arrow How to Transfer / Download PS One Classic Games via PS Vita

Below is a guide covering how to transfer / download PS One Classic Games via PS Vita for those interested (via justpushstart.com/2012/08/ps-vita-how-to-transfer-download-ps-one-classic-games/):

How to Transfer / Download PS One Classic Games

    Prerequisites:
    • Vita
    • Firmware 1.80
    • PS3
    • Vita USB cord
    • Downloaded (not installed) PS1 Classic game

    Guide:

After you complete all of the prerequisites, you’re ready to start the transfer. Prior to doing this, make sure your PS1 classic looks the same as mine pictured above.

After you verify your game isn’t installed, connect your Vita to the PS3. From here select “Content Manager” on your Vita to get started.

Select PS3 System to PS Vita System.

    Select Applications.

Here you will see some new options, but for this guide select “PlayStation.”

Since this item is downloaded on your ps3, pick the first option “Applications downloaded on the PS3 system.”

Here you can see my PS1 classic ready to go, so all you need to do is select it and click copy. This was a rather lengthy process (5+ minutes) but just sit back and wait.

Finally you can see my item copied properly and I am ready to go. Be warned that some games might not work on the Vita, but they should be added down the road.

Ehh... I'm just happy I can play PS1 titles with the right Thumbstick now Still hate the idea that I have to pay more for what I have, but that's Sony for you...

I'm still waiting for a way to play PS1 backups. The only PS1 game I play is Thrill Kill and its not available anywhere.

You can only use the right thumbstick if the game supports it. I put on Soul Reaver and it doesn't use the right thumbstick at all.
And I cant work out how to customize the rear touchpad?

Anyone noticed in videos the normal speed is 1.5? I guess they messed it up and will fix it in the next update.

I really wished they put somewhere a list of everything thats changed and added. Would be nice to know what is a new feature and what is a bug.

Thanks, that guide worked great for transferring Final Fantasy VIII to my Vita! Finally I can finish playing this game -- I refused to play my PSP after paying good money for the Vita.

This is incorrect - this has been there already prior 1.80 FW - as far as I know from the start.
