Sleeping Emulators

Just need some clarification... Sorry if this has been asked before...
I know putting the system to sleep while running an Emu was bad during the stickswapping weeks, but is it okay to do it now?
I'm just trying to conserve battery power as best as possible, and avoid having to restart the emulator every time i want to pick up again.

I'm in the habit of putting my PSP in sleep mode all the time and I've had no problem with the NesterJ emu or the Lumines in MS mode.
