April 3, 2007 - It looks like yesterday's [Register or Login to view links] are today's truths, as Sony announced this morning that the PSP Core Pack would be receiving a price drop to $169.99 (down from $199.99). However, Sony wasn't content to merely slash the price of the hardware; the company also inducted two of the better PSP titles into the Greatest Hits collection, Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. Greatest Hits games retail for $19.99.
"We have always been passionate about making great entertainment accessible to everyone, and the new price for PSP, as well as the continued growth of the Greatest Hits library, reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding the PSP community," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA. "We are pleased that we are able to engineer savings for the consumer at this stage of PSP's lifecycle, allowing more individuals to experience PSP for the first time. In particular, we have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend."
Sony representatives went on to congratulate the PSP for entering its third year on the market, no small feat when pitted against Nintendo's handheld domination. Looking forward, the company had a positive outlook regarding future exclusive entries in major franchises, including God of War, Ratchet & Clank, SOCOM: US Navy SEALs, and Syphon Filter.
All in all, things seem rosy in the land of the PSP. A price drop, more Greatest Hits games, and some upcoming killer apps; what more could you ask for?
