May 8, 2007 - Imagine that you're a successful private detective in a large town: you've got your pick of prime jobs to take on, and you've always been able to solve the cases that you've been given. Unfortunately, you've also made a number of serious enemies, ranging from the smallest criminal to the most powerful mob boss, and they can't wait to make sure that you stay out of their way -- permanently. So one night, as you're tracking a thug, you're captured and killed to keep you out of a mobster's business. Fortunately, you're somehow brought back to life, but with a surprising twist: you're somehow missing your head. In its place is your brain floating in a jar. Not only are you angry at being murdered, you're looking for your missing head.

Welcome to the strange and twisted world of http://psp.ign.com/objects/826/826383.html, the upcoming action game from Vicious Cycle and D3 Publisher of America. Set in the newly coined "Twisted Noir" genre, Dead Head Fred mixes fast paced fights with a heavy dose of environmental puzzles and a twist of the supernatural to make one of the most unique games to grace a UMD. For instance, Fred will be able to swap his jar head for a different one that will imbue him with new abilities and powers. He'll use these new skills to defeat mutants, zombies and other enemies that cross his path.

Big headed tiki guy -- Meet dead detective.

It's been a while since we've seen or even heard anything about Dead Head Fred, so we went directly to Eric Peterson, the President at Vicious Cycle, to find out what's been going on with the undead detective. Along the way, we tried to get some additional details on Fred's adventure, such as whether or not multiplayer modes or downloadable content would be included in the game. For more information, read on.

IGN: It's been a year since we've heard anything about Dead Head Fred. What's been going on with Fred Neuman?

Eric Peterson: Fred is a simple gumshoe with simple tastes. He likes to get up in the morning, have an espresso, peruse the Hope Falls Journal, do the crossword, rip off a few heads, kick some mutant ass, and try to find the guy who took his friggin' head. Just another day in the life of a resurrected gumshoe hell bent on vengeance.

Here at Vicious Cycle, we have been keeping pretty quiet. We didn't want to talk about the game too much until we were certain that the vision we set out on initially was achieved.

We have also been taking our time to make Dead Head Fred a very unique PSP experience. And since Fred is our first intellectual property, we have been treating this game like it is our baby. We want to make absolutely sure we've got everything right.

I want to take this opportunity to throw a big 'shout out' to D3, our publisher, for working with us to properly focus test this game over the last year, while also giving us the time and resources necessary to foster our vision of the product. We both have the same goal in mind for this game and that is to deliver a 'must have' title for the PSP.

Saturday Night Fever can be a killer.

IGN: Has Hope Falls and the Twisted Noir setting changed at all? Are there any new characters that Fred will interact with in his quest to find who killed him?

Eric: Hope Falls is still the main location in the game and the Twisted Noir experience is still intact. The visual style and the humorous dialog contribute to our original goal of making the whole sick and twisted experience come to life.

The character list has stayed pretty much the same. There are currently around 45 characters in the game that have speaking roles. A few characters that we originally hoped to include didn't end up having large enough roles in this particular story and have therefore been sidelined and will be saved for future products. This decision was entirely based on our scope at the time, which was (and still is) very large compared to most PSP titles.
