PSP D-Pad Issue

Finally got my PSP last night, and also picked up a copy of Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower. Anyways, I got everything charged up, fired up the system (which looks simply SPECTACULAR, save the 9 or 10 dead pixels scattered accross the screen, but thats another issue...).

Anyways, the game looks awesome on the screen, I go into arcade mode and start playing...Everything seems to work fine...I can move back and forth, do combos (already went into the L+R options to change the command setting...) but when I tried to do a diagonal jump (Pushing LEFT and UP on the D Pad) the character simply kept moving to the left, or jumped straight up in the air...Jumping RIGHT and UP seems to work better, but unless I apply an abnormal ammount of pressure on the UP direction when doing the the LEFT and UP diagonal jump, I get bad results...

I was just curious to know if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, was the problem just with Darkstalkers, or is this an issue with every game?

Any comments are appreciated...just trying to scope things out to decide if my unit is malfunctioning (as I am not going to stand for a $250 piece of malfunctioning hardware...) or if this is just a case of bad controls in the game...

Take your PSP back to the store and exchange it for a working one.

Yeah, that sounds like a definate hardware problem rather than the game, though Gamepsy did note in their review of the game that the D-pad control in Darkstalkers isn't really all that good. <shrugs>

I bought my PSP within the United States...

After Playing Darkstalkers more over the se past few days, I think the problem *might* be a combination of bad controls in the game and the slightly odd shape of my thumbs...

I have experimented with a couple of different ways of holding the PSP and positioning my thumb, and the problem has been greatly reduced, yet still not perfect...awaiting a response from SCEA as to whether or not this is a frequent problem...

i have the same problem nearly with every game. my d pad is really bad. do anyone know if you can just put something on the contacts, like some peice of paper makes it work better? cause if i want to play games like pro evo or wwe i cant walk diagonal, the only time it works is just when i put pressure on it so that my thumb hurts.. so any help would be great.

It's a commo problem, it happens on all PSP models. On THUG2 it's also pretty much impossible to turn and stop at the same time, or do certain tricks.

you can mod your psp though by putting certain things under the arrow keys to make them more sensitive... i put some tape under the keys and my diagonals work great now.

ok.. this problem most affect for 1.5 user.. the diagonal jump are nearly impossible, it can be easily fix by opening yr psp cutting a cross shape template on a plastic sheet and gluing the template between the d-pad n the d-pad plastic contact. I did this mod when doing the L-R led mod. since then.. i can do all the specail in SFA3. works great.

for me i just use a plastic mouse pad for the template.
