PS3 & wireless network problem - PS3 NEWS

Hey,

i'm having problems with the ps3 on my wireless network. i have a netgear dg834pn MIMO access point to which their are 4 pc's connected to it wirelessly & 2 pc's connected wired & a nintendo WII wirelessly. Problems started to arise when i got my ps3, set it up to access the router via wireless, i have random signouts to the psnetwork, i can surf the net ok on the ps3 but accessing the ps3network is near impossible, i get signed in ,then randomly i get signed out within a minuite or so. I can't play motorstorm online as i cannot sign in.

Just recently i have noticed (been told) that when the ps3 is on all the other wireless pc's have connection problems & drop-outs. :?? When the ps3 is off all is fine again. I have given the ps3 a static ip in the router & even gone as far as putting it in the DMZ :eek2 but this problem still exists. Does anyone know of a solution to this?

I had a similar problem with the random signouts from the P$N etwork it was an option set in my router for wireless. Im going to assume the menu's are the same as im running a netgear router myself, but if you go into the wireless setting section you will probably see this

Wireless Access Point
Enable Wireless Access Point
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)

Turns out it that by my disabling the SSID the network on the ps3 stopped droping, though by doing so your other wireless connections may die at the same time, but i was able to run most of my wirless connections with the broadcasting, hopefully this may help you.

Ok guys lets check somethings on your p$3 then the netgear. What I would like for you to check is the the NAT type you have on your p$3 network so let do this step by step, Go to settings >network> test connection and wait for it to finish and look at NAT TYPE you want a Type 2 which means wireless Type 1 is wired right to the p$3 Type 3 is wireless with a connection problem. As for the NetGear I see 3 firmware updates for that model you have. I feel if you update the firmware it more then likely will help you with the connection issues as well.

True, #1 consideration is router firmware updates.

#2 question: Are there any wireless-b clients out of all your machines (I don't know if the Wii is wireless-g either). If all of your clients are wireless G, then you can change your router from its (usually) default mixed mode (B+G) to "G Only". This can often help in more congested networks.

I'll have to check on the b/g settings, but i think i have both on the network so i may have to leave the router set to mixed mode. As for firmware updates, i have the latest one for this router, also i dissabled the broacast of ssd & it did not help.

Looking around it seems that i am not the only one with this problem with this particular router, also it seems that the ps3 doesn't like the MIMO style routers, well the netgear MIMO routers anyway. If i cannot get this fixed, can anyone recommend a similar product that works with the ps3.

I thought of going with the latest generation of the netgear routers but untill i find out if they are compatible i don't want to chance it yet.

Edit: one more thing i forgot to mention is that the ps3 reports that i have Nat type 2.

What a NONSENSE ... :??

NAT type has NOTHING to do with wireless / wired connection type!

It's just telling you what kind of Network Address Translation is used.

I'm using 2 PS3s - both wired - and one is NAT2 and another NAT3 and none of them has a "connection problems".

Linksys WRT54G or one of the newer versions, as long as it's not one of the V5s (those should be gone anyway.) They're not only reliable but you can load custom firmware on them. The main benefit is the ability to boost the wireless transmit power.

@GrandpaHomer: Can't turn MIMO off, it's part of the whole design of the router & works flawlessly with everything except the ps3. I may try a wired connection to see if it gets any better, but i didn't want a cable trailing round the skirting board to my router :barf:

@Phreak47: Thx will add it to my list in case i get no further.

I also have an old belkin router which i will dig out to see if i can get a better result with that, then i will know for sure that it's a netgear problem.

Update: I tried it wired & all is fine apart from upnp is not available, dunno why. Guess this is akZbGroblem with this particular router.

This gets stranger, when using the ps3 wired into the router via lan cable, i no longer get disconnected from psn, however when the bluetooth controller is on ,that's when the other wireless pc's drop their connection & packets, this tells me that the bluetooth controller is interfeering with the wireless signals of this router. WHY? i will dig my other router out to see if this is the same.

Yea same here, if I use a wireless connection on my PS3 the bluetooth controller makes my whole wireless network drop out for a few seconds before it reconnects! Then its fine. Strange though!
