PS3 2.40 Update Removed!

The black screen of death sometimes caused by 2.40 is a result to unproper checks made before installing a broken update. Might it be possible to exploit this to install a debug firmware or at least a semi-debug again?

I'm curious about this as well! Also, I'm still slightly confused about this. Here's what I think you're talking about.

User A buys Warhawk on a PS3.

User B asks user A for his login details so he can get Warhawk (he is on different console)

User B logs into User A's account, downloads Warhawk, and no longer needs user A's account to play, so deletes it and plays Warhawk on his own account just fine.

Is that what's potentially going on?

i remember reading that the ps3 has similar properties to itunes, itunes lets you use your account on 6 different computers which lets you download the songs which are protected files and if you play them on the other computers that you have signed into you can play them there, since i read that i thought that the features been there for a while.

UPDATE - turned ps3 on this morning and it started up and everything was fine, didnt have time to see if games worked or anything but i would put money on the fact that they work.

That's OK, as they automerged anyway I see. Registered Users can only edit their posts for 5-10 minutes I believe, basically just long enough to find any spelling/grammar/typos and fix them... that is why you probably didn't see the Edit button though.

May be we could use a spare HDD to update?

I mean if we don't wanna take the risk of losing all you games and saves. So take out the exiting HDD, insert the spare one and update. If everything goes well, return you HDD back.

If it's brick, format your spare HDD via PC and put it back in your PS3.

Anyway, this is just my idea. I don't have a spare HDD in-hand to try this but hopefully someone will and tell us the result.

worked fine for me on the 60gb model. I have no issues at all so I guess there's only a problem if the download cuts off and you need to reconnect. This might result in you getting a corrupt firmware which ignores to check the hash or whatever it uses to test if its proper.

Could be some potential exploit in that firmware also, you never know.

Do you reckon its down to a dodgy download of the update (failed attempts making the update corrupted), or was/is it definitely down to older PS3 models?

Just thinking out loud coz maybe it would be safer if people did a manual update via a pen drive (after downloading the update onto their PC).

Wonder if Sony are going to be replacing many units after this black out.

I have a launch day UK 60GB PS3 and haven't had any problems so I wouldn't say it is the older units that are the problem.

Well The only way it would make a difference is were they download the Update from. If you Download it for Sony's website (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate) it is the same as downloading it from the internet on your PS3.

I think there would better luck downloading it on the PS3 because you have less chance off corrupting it when putting it on a Flash drive or what not.

Its definitely not the older units them self. Because I have a NTSC(US) from November '06.
