all you have to do is the following....
(a) create a local path (mkdir /winshare)
(b) run this command (mount -t cifs //<server> /winshare)
...you might need to add -o user=<your account> password=<your password>

...this is how I have gotten mine to work great. =)

The great news is that you will never mess up your PS3. If the install fails for some reason, you will be prompted a kboot prompt. From there you can type "boot-game-os".

Keep in mind that all of these linux variations are running over the protected PS3 hypervisor. So have fun. I can break it unless you drop it on the floor. =)

I have a router, think that could be it? i tried to open ports for samba but still no go.

I also can see a Network icon in Mycomputer (on YDL) and see my workgroup (mshome) but when i try to view that it tells me it can't display anything...that is as close to my shares as i can get so far:??

sry i am new to linux, used it before in small doses to admin a COD server but that is it...
if you want to set static ip on your YD5, you can either use the network panel in system tools or edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.

have fun

SECURITY!!!!

Whats available for computer security? I don't want to get some sort of virus and destroy my PS3...
FC5 is limiting
Gentoo is too new
YD5 is the best so far

Virus. You don't have to worry about virus. They can not harm your machine unless you install wine on it. If you want, I would recommend clamav. This is one of the most popular free antivirus scanner out there. I use it to identify my virus collection. =)

i know theres not much out there for linux boxes but with the PS3s coming out :2sp: i'm sure people will start making things for linux and/or PS3s...
options...
(firewall) iptables is built into FC5/YD5 and it works great.
(antivirus) clamav
(adware) there isn't any

ALL: keep in my your PS3 only has 256MB to work with. The other 256MB is reserved by the PS3 hypervisor.

Yes you can dump game ISO's from YDL 5.0. You would go to the Terminal and then type the proper command. The tutorial for Fedora is found here on:

http://ps3.ps3news.com/

but the dumping command works just the same.

And I have not seen reports yet so just letting people know that I was able to dump with firmware 1.32.

If it is a flat filesystem...yes. If it is like the specialized xbox/xbox360 games...no. Also keep in mind that Blu Ray disk can be 45gig in size (or 42gig). That is a lot of space and time to dump. I foresee the emerging trend of BLURAYrips instead of DVDrips.

Ripping from a Blu-Ray disc was much faster than I expected. 5 gigs took all but a couple of mins. No more than 10 mins it seemed but might have been much less.
